'Absolutely worth it': Former NFL star Colin Kaepernick reflects on taking a knee

Former NFL star Colin Kaepernick -- who led the San Francisco 49ers to a Super Bowl appearance in 2013 -- told ABC News that taking a knee in protest of police brutality was “absolutely worth it.”

“Thinking about whether or not it’s worth it: if even one life was saved, one life was advanced, it'll be worth it every day of the week,” Kaepernick said, describing his commitment to social justice.

The former NFL quarterback added, “I think that's incredibly important as we think about our future. We have to be able to do whatever it takes to make sure that we're advancing our communities, advancing our students, and making sure that we are setting each other up for success in the future.”

Kaepernick, 38, is now using his platform to support future community leaders through the launch of an artificial intelligence-fueled pilot program for youth in Prince George’s County, Maryland.

The partnership between Lumi, Kaepernick’s tool that brings reading and writing to life through AI, and Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS) is helping students interested in storytelling engage with AI characters.

County Executive Aisha Braveboy applauded Kaepernick’s efforts on the field, in the community, and in schools.

“He [Kaepernick] stood by what was right on that field, and now he’s standing by what’s right in this community, and that’s ensuring every child has the ability to learn,” she said.

Kaepernick's life embodies courage, conviction, and creativity, according to PGCPS Interim Superintendent Shawn Joseph. Joseph also said Kaepernick's journey is pushing the country to imagine a world rooted in justice. The former 49ers star sparked a social change movement when he sat for and eventually kneeled during the playing of the national anthem over the course of the 2016 NFL season.

After an August 2016 pre-season game, Kaepernick told reporters he protested in order to "bring awareness" to injustice in America, “unify the country,” and effect change in the world.

U.S. Rep. Glenn Ivey, whose congressional district encompasses Prince George’s County, thanked Kaepernick for his activism.

“When you started taking the knee in protest at NFL football games, the NFL didn’t know what to do,” Ivey explained at Largo High School in P.G. County, where the event was held, adding, “The ripple effects of that are still going. You empowered athletes, not just in the NFL but across the board, to use their voices and their power in their communities.”

Kaepernick, who was selected in the second round of the 2011 NFL Draft and played for San Francisco all six of his NFL seasons, has not played in nearly a decade. However, the dual-threat quarterback said that he’s not finished, even though no teams have contacted him this season.

Today, Kaepernick stressed he is still eager to suit up again.

“We still train every morning, up early before we start getting to business and get up and running,” Kaepernick said.

“We always gonna be ready.”

Can't speak for everyone here. But I haven't watched the nfl since he was blackballed. I don't miss it at all. There're no prizes or kudos for not watching. I'll continue to not watch or support the nfl.
Exact same. I'm no longer in the states, but last season and before I never watched a single game. I was a rabid NFL fan before the Kap issue arose. Now I no longer miss football, don't keep up with the stats or standings... it's simply forgotten. What doubled my resolve is when the story about Jerry Jones being part of a segregation mob in 1957. If it had been an anti-jews mob, the son of a bitch would have never seen another jewish penny in his life, but when the kneegrow is shit on, as usual, ... no harm-no foul, "we still love you massa".

What do you do when the players not on board? Them gladiators help employ so many white people that dont have to risk their bodies and brains. Damn near all the coordinators are white, white sports commentators, white people working the cameras, they even got white fantasy football commentators on ESPN.....now thats what you call off the backs on black folks. When the actual players didn't budge, I knew it was a lost cause.

Respect for Colin tho!!

I could be wrong but I would doubt if he could ever perform at NFL level again... he's been gone too long and he's 38 years old ... an age where most QBs have already retired.
See Phillip Rivers. And Kap has no wear and tear on his body. He could run scout team.

Look what multiyear layoffs did to Muhammad Ali and Mike Tyson. They still kicked ass but they definitely weren't the same after only 3 year layoffs ... If Kaep were to return next season, that would amount to a TEN year layoff! Phillip Rivers was only away from the sport for half that length of time.

I abandoned him when he took they money and still trying to get back in it.

I’m not mad at him. Get your paper. But this ain’t activism this a cash grab.

How you trying to get back in a league that you claimed was racist? Didn’t even attempt to go to XFL or AFL.

I was a season ticket holder and NFL football was a major source of entertainment for me. Kaepernick’s treatment changed my perspective and I started noticing other racist shit like how players are evaluated like cattle for the combine/draft. Not watching it was tough the first season, but ended up much easier than I thought. Sunday afternoons are prime time to spend with family and engage with my kids and wife.

The Kaepernick situation also changed my perspective of other brothers on here too. Some brothers are quick to call others coons, but looked for every reason to keep supporting football when the reality is that their entertainment was/is a priority.

Imma fuck ass nigga, I folded like bitch. Salute to you good sir.

I watch them but I offer no financial support….not even the sports channels….wink wink.

Same w the UFC…I watch faithfully w zero of my dollars going to support.

I’m gettin too old to get all crazy about how racist a historically racist country is.

It’s actually pretty refreshing seeing Dwight’s showing there true colors.

Soooo…..systemic racism IS still a thing.

Carry on…….

Phillip Rivers is 44 and they gave him a job and he's been out of the league longer than kaepernick.

Do you watch the nba? B4 kap there was Abdul rauf in the 90s.. His house even got fire bombed.. NBA pushed a dress code in the early 2000s cause they thought dudes were dressing to "urban" aka black.. They had a special segment where NBA admitted to hiring underserving white players for the 11th/12 slot on the team so that their fan base which was mostly white could see someone that resembled them.. They even started to go to the European league to go draft more white players cause the NBA was getting to black.. This was admitted by NBA staff.. This was yrs b4 the kap situation.. They gave 3 straight mvps to white players to draw in white fanbase.. Steve Nash deserved none of his mvps.. It was plenty of in your face racism in the nba.. Than Donald sterling told ya he gives his players cars and clothes b4 be got his team taken away

After the NFL claimed Black players deserve less compensation for CTE claims than white players because they’re supposedly less intelligent, any Black person who still watches and supports the NFL is no different from those who support Donald Trump.

Not so. Rivers was out the league for five years. As of the next eligible opportunity for his return, next year, Kaep will not have played for ten years. (2016 SF 49ers)

Kaepernick is younger and can still play, Rivers is damn near 50 but the NFL doesn't care as long as they think he can still play having something left in the tank.

Another thread criticizing Black people, huh...?
:puzzled:
It seems the OP just can't help talking shit to or about Black people every time he posts here.
If he's not calling Blacks dumb for believing in God/Jesus, he's calling Africans the least uneducated people on Earth. And now he's alleging Blacks didn't really support Kaepernick because they still attend NFL games and watch them on TV. (Even though Kaepernick himself NEVER called for a boycott of the NFL).

Man, the agents of White supremacy really do show themselves...eventually.

Most Blacks don't care when shit on by cacs, rabs, etc. But if YOU look at them too long they might kill you! Again, no different here in Africa. You read about Africans killing Africans every day. Rwanda, South Africa killing Nigerians and Zimbabweans and burning their shops. Civil wars in the Sudans, Cameroon, Liberia.... I could g on for hours! Now ... when is the last time you heard about Africans slaughtering cacs, rabs, chinese or any fucking body else? That's how we're wired.

Your problem is you live in some kind of mental deluded state where you can't even realize just how fucked up we are as a race. WORLDWIDE! We trail the entire world in wealth, education, health .... we are among the few races who worship a god fashioned in the likeness of our murderers, rapists, enslavers, colonizers and are fucking proud to proclaim such and indoctrinate or own kids at an early age to follow suit! Are you wearing blinders? I'm living in Africa. The sickest, poorest, most uneducated, most exploited, least employed continent on Earth. Where kneegrows walk around in a trance in worship of a bearded white motherfucker who doesn't and never did exist, but was instead manufactured by council in Nicea in 325AD. Our best and highest achieving routinely flee the race and marry cacs, latins, asians or whoever they can find that's not Black and you don't have a comment. If Black amerikkka was a country of its own, it would statistically be, by far, the most dangerous nation on Earth. A killing field, even when compared to the most violent locations in South and Central America! Black amerikkkans are by far, the most incarcerated demographic on Earth, not just amerikkka. But I'm not supposed to notice any of these things, lest I'm a traitor, right? And yes, Africans ARE BY FAR the least educated continent on Earth. Ever heard the adage that you can't fix shit till you admit it's broke? You are no help toward the progress of our race, nor is anyone who thinks like you. If anything I wrote is in err, then post the corrected version of what I should have reported. Maybe start with which continent is least educated. Post your facts and source., You won't, because you can't!

Where was all these people in the 90s why no protest for Abdul rauf

There was no sacrifice made in measurable numbers for Rauf or Kaep. We're nothing like the jews who to this day rarely buy Fords because Henry Ford I, whose been dead for nearly a hundred years, was an antisemite. Jews will make you pay! Blacks haven't mounted a political corrective response with participation reaching even 50 percent since the Birmingham bus boycott in the 1960s! We're bear as much culpability for our condition and circumstances as any other present-day group. Even Reverend Farrakhan has admitted as much. We are not honoring or supporting our own front-line warriors. Takes me back to a line by the fabled Last Poets. "Niggas loved to hear Malcolm rap, but they didn't love Malcolm! Niggas love everything but themselves."
