It nearly happened during the offseason. It nearly happened this season. But according to multiple league soruces, it will happen in the next 24 hours: Jim Zorn will be fired as coach of the Washington Redskins.

The expected change would pave the way for Washington and its new executive vice president and general manager, Bruce Allen, to step up its pursuit of former Denver Broncos coach Mike Shanahan -- or any other candidate the team is considering.

Washington closes out its season at San Diego, and it's possible that Allen could fire Zorn on the long plane ride home. But it is more likely that Zorn will be dismissed Monday, once the team is back and settled in Washington. Either way, Zorn is expected to be the first head coach fired in what always is one of the most tumultous times of the year in the NFL.

The Redskins were 4-11 entering Sunday's game, regressing from their 8-8 finish in Zorn's first season.

Zorn appeared on the edge of being fired in October, when he was stripped of his offensive play-calling responsibilities after a loss to the Kansas City Chiefs dropped the team to 2-4. Those responsibilities were given to consultant Sherman Lewis, who, two weeks before, had been retired and was calling bingo games at a senior center and delivering Meals on Wheels.

At the time, Zorn stopped short of saying he was given an ultimatum, but said he would comply with the request "because I want to stay here and win."

Days later, then-executive vice president of football operations Vinny Cerrato said Zorn would finish out the season. Cerrato abruptly resigned last month.

Zorn, formerly a quarterbacks coach with the Seattle Seahawks, joined the Redskins as an offensive corrdinator in 2008 -- and two weeks later, found himself the team's head coach, after the team had interviewed coaching candidates for a month. He had never been a coordinator for an NFL team before the Redskins hired him.

Whoever follows Zorn will be the seventh coach hired by the Redskins since Daniel Snyder bought the team in 1999.

The Zorn Nonentity

As I write this, the Redskins are playing for pride and their jobs...and are struggling against Billy Volek and the Charger subs. It's time for Jim Zorn to pay the piper.
Schefter is reporting that Zorn will be out as Washington coach tomorrow. The only reason it's taking so long is that no one wants to have a press conference on a Sunday night.

For 12 fanbases, tomorrow marks the start of the real season. But for the rest of us, it's coach-firin' week! Always a thrilling and suspenseful time for coaches and their families, fans of failure, degenerate prop bettors.

Zorn's gone, which we all knew. Lovie Smith too, if the Chicago media gets their way. But will ownership cut slack to first-year coaches Raheem Morris, Todd Haley, Steve Spagnuolo and Eric Mangini? Will eight be enough for John Fox? And where will Mike Shanahan and Bill Cowher end up?

This week's "organizational meetings" are teamspeak for "firing squad." Bring 'em on.

Zorn joins Ravens as QB coach

The Baltimore Ravens announced on Saturday they have hired ex-Redskins coach Jim Zorn as their quarterbacks coach.

"Jim played successfully in the league for a long time, and certainly understands what an NFL quarterback goes through," Ravens coach John Harbaugh told The Baltimore Sun. "He has been an NFL quarterback coach, NFL head coach and is familiar with our offense. That's a great resume for us."

Zorn replaces Hue Jackson, who left the Ravens to join the Oakland Raiders as their offensive coordinator.

Zorn was fired by the Redskins after a 4-12 season, capped by a 23-20 loss to the San Diego Chargers in the season finale. It was the team's worst record in 15 years. Zorn was 12-20 in two seasons in Washington.

"I've gotten to know Jim the last couple of years and I'm impressed with him as a person," Harbaugh said. "He's a good, kind and decent man. He's an exciting addition to our staff."
