Sometimes you think
What would it take
To just get the basics out of life?
Dancing to their tune
Playing the part
Succeeding
Until they rip you apart
Trusting in a system
Not designed for your benefit
Yet we still play....
Teaching our young
To have faith
To dream
That impossible dream
To hope
That impossible vision
To work
That impossible journey
To have that work
Torn from your hands
For no other reason
Than being black
Yet we still play.....
What dreams are we really selling?
Dreaming of living
When change comes with death
Black skin, red blood, clear tears
We have been crying so long
Our hearts are dried
Hardened from the abuse
Just trying to be human
Yet we still play.....
Yesterday was Trayvon
God bless that boy
But it took a life
To give humanity life
Even for one slice
Of this American pie
Yet we still play......
