Somebody over at Sony is surely going to get spanked today. At some point yesterday afternoon, Nimrod Antal’s Armored — a film which is still in theaters (and distributed by Sony Pictures) — was released on the Playstation Store in both Playstation 3 and PSP formats. Worst of all, they didn’t even make any money from the blunder — the film was free to download for any sharp-eyed PS3 owner. It was pulled after about five hours, but in that time it was downloaded by many.

Sony has yet to comment on the blunder, but I think it could hint at some of their future plans for digital offerings. Specifically, it reminds me of their plan to offer Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs on Sony televisions and Blu-ray players a month before it’s supposed to hit DVD and Blu-ray.

Sony offered Cloudy for $25.99 — a price which likely kept casual buyers away, but would probably be appealing to parents when compared to the cost of taking their entire family to the theater. We don’t have any statistics from Sony on the film’s digital purchases yet, but I’m eager to see how they fared.

This wasn't an accident, this shit was a test.

If you've already got an hd setup capable of playing movies in the highest definition then why wouldn't Sony release their own content to you from their devices?

Maybe this will be one of the perks for the premium PSN, movies out at the same time that they're in the theaters.

There have been reports of movie studios wanting this anyway but movie theaters were fighting it because it would be an end for them.

So they had both the PS3 and PSP movies available, in HD and on the PSN yet it was a mistake that this got out:rolleyes:

Because Sony would alienate and piss off just about every major film distributor and movie house owner and get their shit blackballed for pulling some backhanded stunt like this and eating away at their revenue on the 1st run release.

When you're a producer and you have a competing proprietary distribution channel, but you depend on MUCH LARGER distribution channels to show and distribute your films - you have to be very sensitive to your other business partners and how "Free" you are with your distribution channel.

Sony is trying to become a distributor.

Sony Studios is too big to black ball.

This is coming, it's only a matter of time.

You think? Go to any major electronics retailer. How much/many Sony products do you see?

They dominated store shelves in the 80's and 90's, then around 00 they tried to go hard with the Sony Style website and do the "freeze and squeeze" to their retail partners on margins and forcing them buy products that only had all their proprietary bullshit built in so retailers had to carry more accessory slow moving SKUs on some "take it or leave it shit".

Retailers responded by saying, fuck you and just started carrying less and less Sony to the point that by 2003-2005 Sony had almost no footprint in the majors.

Fact of the matter is, Sony needs them more than they need Sony's once in a year blockbuster. The PS3 / digitial distribution strategy is a nice idea and probably the future 15 years from now, but in the meantime they need to tread lightly and make blunders like this.

The movie houses and distributors know their time is limited without major innovation like Avatar 3D for instance. The last thing they need is a partner helping accelerate their extinction.

I agree with this, 15 years is probably the realistic time frame as well.

Except if you had read the article you would know that they already tested the idea with Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, except instead of charging double the price like they did before some dummy accidently put it up for free when they were setting it up to sell later.

I read the article and it still sounds like a test.

Just because they claim it was a mistake doesn't mean that it was.
