Some blacks insist: 'I'm not African-American'

To add some thought to the original article.

Black tells you how you look, doesn't tell you anything else.

If you can tell what a person is like based on his black skin then you are part of the problem.

This system of white supremacy has only 2 variables: white and non-white

When the non-whites understand that this system needs to be destroyed then we would have moved pass semantics.

The fact that we need a definition means that there is an acknowledgement for the need for classification.

Why classification?

For targeting? Measurement?

Why?

Call me the root.
My being transcends boundaries formed by man,
Transcends time created by a Gregorian calendar
My spirit, an extension of humanities umbilical
Only knows truth
I'm blind to the illusions
And expectations
Of those that have lost their way
I don't feel the urge to conform
To fit into boxes
To make the ignorant comfortable
Die to live
Or live your death

This will go on forever. Most don't want to be called African because of shame of slavery and Africa.
People will say that Africans hate us Americans of African decent, but I work for a hospital and talk with Africans from Ghana, Nigeria and Kenya.
I am talking doctors and Nurses and they light up when I ask them about their country or say a word in Twi to Ghanians. I have a list of doctors that have informed me that if I ever go to Africa, they could help me.
Because I work in IT, They always call me now for help because of how I showed concern for them. Well I go out of my way in general to help older African-Americans, Africans or Blacks at the hospital in IT.

The African Family must rebuild and come to an overstanding.
Each One Teach One

You can just call me AfricanRoots.

But, is the A/A debate about using standards that white America dictate or, what we, as in us, are dictating. For example, I do see where white folk really give a sheet whether we call ourselves Black, negro or African American. I believe that we coined the phrase African American? So if you say this is about issues within us, thats one thing; but

Maybe we should just call ourselves, American  I do, but often I will say, American, of African descent.

The debatable luxury of not caring that's packaged as "freedom" is simply them lying to themselves. The rank-and-file may feel they can give up the responsibility for caring about the fallout of what they have done and are doing to whatever alphabet soup orgs set up to defend/fleece them, and it doesn't matter because the end result is the same.

Whether all of them or their representatives, the goal hasn't changed: to dilute potential opposition, especially blackness, to the point of ineffectiveness because at no time, ever, will it be accepted as "American". These people eat their own and don't blink; the pretense that somehow they'll accept colour is beyond foolish. No amount of window-dressing will change that, and whatever passes for intelligentsia amongst black people in America are sorely deluded to hold on to that empty hope. It's like an abused girlfriend who thinks that if she loves her man hard enough that he'll stop hitting her one day. :smh:

Pretense serves no one.

In 40 years hispanics, indians, latinos whatever you want to label them will be the majority. So the continent racial makeup will almost go back to what it was before colonialization will nature have corrected itself. What determines the status quo man or nature.

The Honorable Elijah Muhammad teaches us that we are africans, the original people of Almighty God Allah who is Master Fard Muhammad to whom all praises are due. We are from the tribe of Shabazz lost in this wilderness called North America. We are Moors the children of Master Fard Muhammad who is Almight God Allah.

Lots of truth spoken here. I personally have begun looking for a more accurate
description of my humanity as of late. I am not black and African American is vague to me. Moor/Moorish is as close to that accurate description as I have found so far but I want to discover more. I feel that if not for the bottleneck of slavery and suppression of humans from the land mass known as Africa this issue would be non existent.

Ya'll don't understand: While the usage had been around before, it was pushed by Rev Jessie Jackson in the 1980s. Jessie wanted to match our power up against the other hyphenated Americans that dominated his adopted city of Chicago.

Could be some truth to what you're saying but the term itself was started by the U.S. govt and spread by the FBI and CIA.

I saw an interestLIN thing on CNN tonight. The anchorwoman was interviewing a kid regarding the Jeremy Lin phenomena who proudly referred to himself as Taiwanese-American. Made me wonder, was that term something white America had dictacted he use? Could be, but the kid seem really proud to refer to himself as Taiwanese-American and went on to state how he thought Jeremy Lin made all Taiwanese-Americans really proud to be Taiwanese-Americans.

The only thing that matters is how people define themselves.

First, I am an American with all rights and privileges therein and I dare anyone to challenge that. This is my home, built on the backs of my ancestors but my cultural roots extend back to Africa.

As an homage to my forebears I use the title African-American.
