Roach Views Cotto as Much Tougher Foe Than Tim Bradley

The trainer of WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao, Hall-of-Famer Freddie Roach, expects a big pay-per-view buyrate for the May 5th junior middleweight battle between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and WBA champion Miguel Cotto.

"It's going to do well on pay-per-view, because Cotto is still one of the best boxers in terms of pay-per-view, behind Manny and Mayweather. He attracts a huge audience on pay-per-view. For us, Cotto would have been a much bigger challenge than Tim Bradley. As far as I'm concerned Manny has faced fighters like Bradley, "said Roach to Jose Gorrdian.

Cotto was Pacquiao's first choice for a June 9th return date. After both sides disagreed on the contracted weight limit, Cotto reached an agreement with Mayweather. Pacquiao will likely face Bradley.

"I feel that a rematch with Cotto was the best match for us right now, for boxing fans and the world. He's coming [off] a victory over Antonio Margarito and every time I see him he looks better and better. The fight would have been more competitive and profitable for us, but you don't always get what you want," Roach said.

Roach is pulling for Cotto to upset Mayweather, with a distance hope that a rematch with Pacquiao will happen in the fall.

"I don't know how good their chances are [to win], but I hope Cotto will win. My best wishes to Miguel, and I hope that he has the best fight of his life. Mayweather is a very good counter-puncher, but Miguel has a good coach in his corner and they seem to get along. Miguel and his coach have to figure out what to do," said Roach.

Roach Gives Cotto a Good Chance To Beat Mayweather
Posted by: Jhonny Gonzalez on 2/5/2012 .

Freddie Roach, the trainer of Manny Pacquiao, gave his take on the scheduled junior middleweight fight between WBA champion Miguel Cotto and undefeated five-division beltholder Floyd Mayweather Jr. The battle between Cotto and Mayweather takes place on May 5th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Pacquiao had previously stopped Cotto in 2009, when they fought at a catch-weight of 145-pounds.

"Manny had one of his greatest victories against Cotto. But their styles [Pacquiao and Mayweather] are so different. Floyd sometimes averages 15 punches per round. How can you beat someone like Cotto, who is a strong puncher and throws so many punches [with only 15 punches per round]?," Roach told Jose Sanchez.

"When Cotto catches you on the ropes, that's where he does his best work. And Mayweather likes to lean against the ropes to counter. In that scenario, Cotto could succeed. As for styles, it is an interesting fight. It's a good technical boxer fighting with a counter-puncher. Mayweather is strong physically, but I think Cotto is a bit stronger. Mayweather is definitely much faster, as was Pacquiao [against Cotto]. Miguel has to be very careful about the kind of fight [he plans to initiate] against a counter-puncher like Mayweather.

Roach has the belief that Cotto's new trainer, Pedro Diaz of Cuba, will put together the perfect strategy to defeat Mayweather.

"I think his new coach will know how to fight him because he is Cuban and that is the style of almost all Cuban fighters [patient counter-punching]. With a good strategy, Cotto will do very good job," Roach said.

Roach: Cotto is Declining, Mayweather May Stop Him

According to Freddie Roach, trainer of WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao, there won't be any surprises on May 5th at the MGM Grand - when Floyd Mayweather Jr. moves up to 154-pounds to challenge WBA champion Miguel Cotto, who Pacquiao stopped in the twelfth round in 2009.

In the opinion of Roach, Cotto has been declining since the beating he took at the hands of Antonio Margarito in July of 2008, when the Mexican stopped the Puerto Rican star in the eleventh round.

"The speed and the boxing ability will be a big difference," Roach said. "I think Cotto's been declining ever since Magarito beat him up so badly. He's really a bit on the downside at this point. I think Mayweather may even stop Miguel now."

:smh::smh::smh:

Damn. They need to pick a message and stick with it.:lol::lol::lol:

I wouldn't even knock dude if he had really changed his mind based on a new angle, but dude contradicted himself, not even within a month (the shortest month at that) and he is going back to some shit that happened years ago that has been said by everyone. I only wonder if anyone that has access to this dude would ask him the following (beyond the obvious contradiction):

1) If Cotto was done after Margarito, why did they pull that catch weight shit when Pac fought him?

2) If Cotto was done, why were they even talking about fighting him again?

3) If Cotto is more dangerous than Bradley and Cotto is done, why should anyone care about Pac fighting Bradley?

4) Is the fogginess in your mind that allows you to come up with this shit, the same reason you have nothing good to say in the corner?
