Brooklyn Networks is a free 6-week, full-time Low Voltage Cable Installation Training, and Job Placement Assistance. Students learn how to install the lines that run behind walls and ceilings that are hooked up to computers, telephones, broadcast cables, and more.

Brooklyn Woods is a free, full-time training program in woodworking skills, cabinetmaking, and fabrication. In only seven weeks, trainees learn how to safely and properly care for hand tools, power tools, and woodworking machinery; shop production, finishing techniques, and cabinet installation; shop math, measurement and mechanical drawing. We also provide comprehensive safety training, including the 30-hour OSHA General Construction Safety and Health class.

The “Made in NY” PA Training Program is a collaboration between BWI and the New York City Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment. Our mission is to give unemployed and low-income New Yorkers the chance to work on New York sets and build careers in this dynamic field of film and television production.

BWI’s Post Production Training Program trains New Yorkers for careers in post-production. The five-week program combines a thorough introduction to the post-production industry with hands-on skills training in five commonly-used software applications for video editing and visual effects. After completing the program, trainees will receive two years of career guidance and support.

The New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) Resident Training Academy provides skills training and placement for NYCHA residents, helping them to access various careers with NYCHA and its contractors. The Academy most frequently offers training for positions as Housing Caretakers and for construction positions. In the past, we have also trained Pest Control Technicians, Painter’s Apprentice, and Maintenance positions.

Red Hook on the Road is BWI’s longest-running and largest training program. The program offers classroom-based and behind-the-wheel training leading to a NYS Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). We then help hundreds of graduates each year access jobs as drivers of school buses, trucks, paratransit vehicles and other commercial vehicles that move people and products throughout the city.

CAREERS WITH A CLASS B/BPS LICENSERed Hook on the Road assists unemployed residents of New York City obtain a Class B CDL license. A Red Hook on the Road graduate has all the tools for an entry level career in commercial driving along with connections to the best jobs in the industry.
Commercial driving can mean operating a truck, city bus, school bus, or Access-A-Ride vehicle. There are also other vehicles you will be eligible to drive with this license. Your commercial driving career might require customer service skills, loading and unloading trucks, transporting the elderly, or driving children to and from school. Every job will require you to have a good understanding of your vehicle and the ability to navigate and that’s what Red Hook on the Road helps you achieve. Our graduates leave our program with a CDL Class BPS license and lifetime connections in this industry.
Please note that we do not train for CDL Class A.
ELIGIBILITY
Applying to Red Hook on the Road is a competitive process. Here are the eligibility requirements:
- Must be unemployed – Including part-time or gig-employment (Uber, Grub Hub, etc.)
- 21 years or older
- Live in New York City and be legally eligible to work in the U.S.
- Obtain and submit a driver record from the DMV that must be less than 30 days old
- Able to attend training Monday-Friday 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM
- Must be able to pass a drug test
- Absolutely no DWIs or DUIs
- Individuals with a criminal record are encouraged to apply
- Must have a valid NY State Driver’s License for at least two years with the following:
- A) Four (4) points or fewer
- B) No more than One (1) suspension (must be cleared for at least two years)
- C) No more than Two (2) convictions showing on the driver record
APPLICATION PROCESS
If you are interested in applying for our program please fill out a Red Hook on the Road Interest Form, this is the first step in the application process and helps us determine if you meet our eligibility requirements. If you qualify, we respond via email with instructions on how to obtain an Abstract of your Driving Record, reviewing your driving record is a crucial part in the application process. If your abstract meets our program requirements, we will then invite you to an Orientation/Information Session where you will learn more about the program, careers available to you, entry level salaries and the next steps in the process. It should be noted that we require video and sound for our Orientations/Information Sessions.
APPLICATION FOLLOW-UP PROCEDURE
If you have already attended a Red Hook on the Road Orientation/Information Session the next step would be submitting your Class B CDL permit with General Knowledge, Airbrakes & Passenger endorsements along with your resume for an interview invitation.
ONLY CANDIDATES WHO HAVE ATTENDED AN ORIENTATION WILL BE CONSIDERED FOR AN INTERVIEW.
We have approximately 12 seats per cycle and are starting cycles every couple of weeks. We are always recruiting and never stop taking applications. If you feel that you are ready to apply please do not hesitate, we consider every application that is submitted.
