Should the Detroit Lions Draft For Need or a QB?

If the reports regarding the Lions' recent successful mini-camp are true, than the last thing the Lions need with their #1 pick is a QB. The reports say that current QB, Daunte Culpepper, has lost about 40-pounds and shows no sign of earlier knee problems.He's moving much quicker, and without the Lions adding needed OL (LT, and move Backus to the rightside) help, he'll have to be a helluva lot quicker.

A new QB would be of no immediate help (Based on the players currently), so drafting one would be a wasted pick. The same-o,same-o, as evidenced by the past picks, i.e., WR's. These picks are usually made under the cover known as "the best player available. and that guise is often a cop-out.

The obvious answer? NEED!

David Carr could have been a good QB if he went to a better team

Mel Kiper made a great point that a lot of times you scream out "bust" at QB when really its the team who is a "bust" cuz they didn't handle the player correctly

If the talent and desire(very key) is there as long as a player doesn't get hurt, the teams need more of the blame if they don't succeed

But I agree, the Lions have too many needs to just go with their first pick in a highly skilled position. But, they also need someone who can come in and provide a boost to sell tickets. Get an electrifying player, sell some tickets while you're rebuilding. A good RB will always sell tickets and can make an immediate difference in the production of your offense (Adrian Peterson). A good QB is developed around a good system.

The should trade the #1 overall picks for as many picks as they can (including a 1st rounder in the top 5) and then draft the toughest, most NFL ready lineman that's available. Preferably a center. It takes more than one stud lineman to build a line, but you MUST have an all pro center or it will never work. They need to recruit a SOLID line coach, a strength coach and a free agent pick up or two. Make the commitment to building that line first. Then go out and get the skill players later.

Offensive and defensive lines are the foundation of a football team. You will not win without both

The ticket sales are not the problem. Up until the 2nd quarter of the season, they sold out (mainly because of the new stadium and the long time season ticketholders). That shit changed when they were closing in on that record. But some how every season the Ford's manage to generate money from a losing franchise.

I agree 100%,and have been saying that for years. It includes more than QB's. There have been many skilled-position players classified as so-called "busts" with the Lions but excell with other teams.

We have BAD coaching and scouting, which leads to us getting lousey front-office characters like Millen,et al!

The Lions need a franchise QB to be groomed while Daunte holds the reigns. Skipping over Stafford and expecting to be bad enough to be in the Bradford/McCoy sweepstakes next year is a terrible message to your team's players and its fans. If I'm in a new managing regime, the last thing I want to do is come in on the premise that I'm purposefully planning to be a loser for the next few years. I'm not saying that the Lions will immediately get better with Stafford, but in this era of football, any competent team should be able to get good really quickly. (Did you have AZ in the Superbowl for the NFC last year)?

Draft the QB and trade picks for the linemen to protect him, not the other way around.

the Lions are stuck - they have the 1st pick ,so they have to take the "best player" teams dont use 1st picks on Offensive Linemen /Defensive Linemen

teams take QB's or Running Backs with the 1st pick - and Satfford is rated the best QB


Even though IMO ,Mark Sanchez will be a better PRO QB

Aaron Curry is the best player on a lot of draft boards but won't get picked until 3rd overall at best

The Texans took the DL over the VY/Bush because they realize they made a mistake taking Carr over Peppers, especially when Palmer was coming out the next year. Championship teams are built on the line of scrimmage, don't waste those picks on skill players UNLESS they are can't miss talents. You can find a running back on most street corners...look how many cats come off the streets to ball. Exception being AD

No, what got the Lions in their current predicament is terrible drafting, and terrible FA signings i.e. Matt Millen. Anyhow Courtney Brown, Orlando Pace, Dan Wilkinson, Steve Emtman, and Russell maryland were linemen. Taking something other than a qb/rb isn't the norm, but it's been done many times before.

Only take Stafford if you believe that he is a franchise QB for you. Though I do believe that he is better than Sanchez (product of the system and the conference IMO). Sanchez in most drafts would have been taken in the 2nd round. It is getting to the point where no one want the 1st pick because they do not want to pay them.

I can't disagree with you, Pow. We're in the same 'ballpark'. But I think that so-called "norm" has changed. The precedent is there, as evidenced by the names you mentioned. Plus, the #1 choice is getting more expensive....especially QB's.

I've heard that both the Broncos and the Jets are talking about "moving up" in the draft, and we can probably add three,or more, teams to that list by the time draft day rolls around. The Lions are in the 'cat-bird' seat. I have a feeling that they won't screw-up this opportunity.

When the NFLPA and management start negotiations on a new bargaining agreement, one of the areas they'll discuss is a monetary limit on the #1 draft choice. The vets have been grumbling for years about giving newly drafted players 'Big Bucks' before they've have a chance to perform at the pro-level. Management might take a 'take it, or leave it' approach. Discouraging these long, and sometimes, contentious holdouts.
