Got out the army and been working at juvenile detention center. I got my CDL when I was still in the military.
I had a rough day about a month ago at the detention center breaking up fights and dealing with asshole teenagers. I'm 6-3 and in shape but having to ball up 16-19 year gang bangers is getting old.
My days off are set and I get overtime as needed .
I applied for my local mass transit as a bus driver but got selected to operate the lite rail. I did the interview, dot physical and drug test.
Today I passed a practiced lite rail test that they give prior to making you a offer and scheduling for training. My official start date is in two weeks but I'm kinda nervous about leaving my current job for the lite rail. Thanks for feed back

Seems like your leaving one job that your not too fond off for another that your not too fond of.

Depending on your age, as you get older doing things that your not happy doing becomes more difficult.

‘I just turned down a 50/hr (91K) job bc I don’t want to go over the Whitestone everyday.

My advice, send out a bunch of resumes, if you get a lot of interest, don’t be afraid to take some chances.

Im in the Nuc Med field and this month there were more jobs posted than I can remember ever in the past.

If you have some savings to sustain you for at least 3-6 mos. I’d take a chance.

Life is truly too short to be unhappy.

Good luck bruh,

Carry on…..

Need a little background, brother. Where do you live? Are both of these government jobs? How long you been with your current job? How old are you and what are your retirement plans?

The good thing about lite rail is that your direct contact with the public will be limited.
Get out of detention/corrections ASAP. Especially with this monkey pox fuckery going down.

whichever one u think you can be happiest with and has less stress and toll on you.
i juggled 4 jobs at one time for the first 6 months of this year......now im just working 2 of them....but i absolutely love working for both companies.

38 been working at the detention center 4 years, the lite rail seems like a chill job , I just don't know what my schedule will be that's my biggest concern working every weekend.
My current job I love my schedule just tired of the foolishness with the gang beef.

Interesting line of work. I’m curious of your answer to some of the questions that has been asked.
If you're a big dude the administration will take advantage of your size , they think I'm the muscle and expect me to respond to every fight in the facility, I'm running all over the building breaking up fights . The unit I work on it's rarely a fight but a lot of petty arguments among the detainees , I have to constantly intervene in gang beef.

I think if I were 38 I'd start looking for something a bit less stressful with the potential to move up. If you operate a light rail now you'll be in a great position to take advantage of high speed rail when it finally gets to America. I wouldn't want to enter middle age having to keep a bunch of knuckleheads in line every day. If you live in a city that values mass transit that's definitely the way to go. Of course the pay is the real decider. I would jump ship quick for a raise but I'd only take so much of a cut for a job with a brighter future. I work in transportation and I can tell you first hand that its a wide open field with not nearly enough employees to fill the demand. That's my two cents.

I work in light rail and its been cool for me.

A job is a job and unless you have a strong passion for something that can profit you or are uniquely skilled in some area, most jobs will be a means to an end. Working every weekend is typical for entry level positions, and good days off and shift will generally come with seniority.

It sounds like you don't want to continue with the foolishness of your current situation, so a new foolishness will be a welcome change of pace (and better than dealing with young gang bangers.)

Salute, my brotha.

I know you have stories for days dealing with that section of society. Minus the muscle of it all, there is a level of character you must have as well.

I think as you age, this line of work is definitely something you want to steer away from. I’m 38 too and it seems very common that people around that age is looking for a career transition. I know many people doing it now.

I’m a huge fan of trains, so I already think the light rail job is cool as fuck. But outside of it being cool, I’m not sure what it all comes with. But most importantly is you are gain experience and giving yourself options.

Nothing but luck to you, fam. I hope the BGOL brothas can give you some solid advice.

Shiddd surely light rail pays a lot more right? And as you said limited contact with diseased humans.
Does light rail offer overtime and chance for advancement?

Being you are new, you are not gonna get the shift with the weekends and holidays off.

Like any job, you start at the bottom and pay your dues.

My advice is look thru the schedule and see what is the crappiest shift nobody wants….and choose that one.

99% of the time it’s graveyard hours. And believe it or not, graveyard hours is the best cuz usually nothing extraordinary happens during those hours. And time moves faster for some reason. I have experience in graveyard, so I know.

Management will know it’s a crappy shift. They see you working it, no complaints and bitching coming from you, high chance they will hook you up within 6 mos to a year with a better shift hours or shift you prefer.

Jobs like that, think opposite of the other idiots on the job, it will work for you in the long run without having to kiss anybody’s rear end and lowering your self standards and pride.

Damn man. You up in there like Booker T from WWE? LOL

On the flip side of the coin, there’s days that I wish I could toss around and crack domes of the stupid mufuckas that babysit all damn day.

What was your MOS in the army?

the crazy thing is if you get to physical you can catch a cps case.
told a kid the other day that i wasn't in the mood for bullshit so he walked in his room without me having to assist him.
if they respect you they will listen. we got a lot of kids locked up for murder and they wind like babies. they feel entitled to everything.

Let me start by saying I only read the thread title and not the OPs reason for the question. You should do what you feel is best for you and stop worrying about what others think.
