Concerns are growing in Washington, D.C. about some major grocery stores being able to keep their doors open due to shoplifting.

During a news conference Friday, D.C. Councilman Trayon White said he spoke to the regional management of a popular Giant Food store on Alabama Avenue Southeast.

“We had the opportunity to meet with some of the leadership of this Giant,” White said. “Some of the regional leadership at this Giant, what we heard was disheartening. We learned that this Giant has lost over $500,000 in product loss, which is about 20% of the sales. We know it's tough times and we know the price of food has skyrocketed in the last three years. But we cannot afford to hurt ourselves by constantly taking it from the store. It means that everybody is going to be without a place to eat. And enough is enough.”

“We also learn that Giant’s leadership has spent over $300,000 in security,” said White. “But that did not derail the people from stealing. In fact, the regional manager told us that people will have stuff in their carts walking straight through the door --- straight through the door!"

Yeah man. 2 of my closest Walmarts closed due to arson...to distract from shoplifting. Only one will reopen.

The few mess it up for the many.

I can afford to shop at higher priced stores but many can not.

The one in my hood went from Rite-Aid to Walgreens to crickets.

I went into one of the Arab owned bodega joints today and the shit on the shelf looked archaic.

The plastic all crinkled and brittle. I seriously was in there w the smh.

It’s really embarrassing what we allow to be in our vicinity’s.

Fucked up that we keep seeing the same story play out. I'm an old man and this goes back to my childhood in the 80s. Same shit, but young people never seen it before so they believe the solution is to throw more money at problem. Shit never works. Always easy to spend someone else money.

Store has always been understocked, understaffed and with low quality inventory. The corporation milked the residents for decades, gave them shit service and goods at inflated prices and are now using them as scapegoats to take all those profits and skip town. Fuck em.

It's going to be hard to stop people from stealing,especially in states where their slapping them on the hand and letting them go.But to act like it's only in the Urban area's is crazy and they need to address it as such.

I don't mind buying items that are behind glass,have a lock or have a security person standing in front of it,as long as I get what I want cause I'mma pay for it with someone else's foodstamps card anyways.

STOP STEALING ......they'll steal free shit,this here 12" black & white television set is free to whoever wants it is what the sign says on it and a motherfucker will walk past it two or three times while checking it out and to make sure no one is watching and will pick it up and hurry away thinking they got away with something ......you can't change that frame of mind.

Interesting side note, I am a small business owner in DC and am apart of a few community organizations. A lot of large scale grocery stores pay much less rent per square foot than other retailers, they basically pay very little per month. The grocery stores leverage the fact that they are anchor stores for the plaza and will attract hundreds or thousands of people per day who will also shop at other stores there. They also said they have razor thin margins and cite "shrinkage" or shoplifting as a major problem. I have been at several meeting with Safeway management where they say shrinkage is the biggest problem, especially for the location on Minnesota Ave. I don't believe everything they say, especially about lack of profitability, but shrinkage or shoplifting is a major problem.

IMO people will always take advantage of any situation. If you have weak laws people are going to take advantage of it. In DC all you have to do is run away from a crime you have committed in a car or on a motorcycle, the police are not allowed to chase you, it's a joke. I just saw a hit and run on Minnesota and Benning, a guy ran the light and crashed into a car who had the right of way. The perpetrator just took off. Two cop cars were right at the intersection when it happened and watched him leave. Over the summer, I was on 8th and H, A guy ran over to a parked police car was was complaining about a vehicle closeby on H St that went through the light and almost hit him. The police said yeah we know, but it's a stolen car and we can't chase. The dude was mad AF.

“We have no other choice,” Diane Hicks, senior vice president of operations said Thursday during a walk-through with officials from the D.C. mayor’s office, the Metropolitan police and fire departments, and Chamber of Commerce. She added that other nearby stores have locked up all their product on those aisles or removed them altogether. “I’ve been leaving it out for our customers and unfortunately it just forces all the crime to come to us.”

I am dealing with the same issues, people just walking off with your shit; than wonder why you are bouncing out of the country. Another desperate move is planting surveillance and gas lighting you about it.

They need to steal from drug dealers or criminals, not people like me bringing you essential items.
