Wake County District Court Judge Craig Croom Monday told a homeowner that he could be put to death if he is convicted of first-degree murder for a shooting early Sunday morning that killed a 20-year-old man outside a house in Northeast Raleigh.

Chad Cameron Copley, 39, outfitted in blood-red jail garb, walked into a third-floor courtroom early Monday afternoon. He was represented by public defender, Charles Caldwell, who told Croom that the Capital Defenders Office would represent Copley.

Police said Copley was inside his garage at 3536 Singleleaf Lane, off Mitchell Mill Road, when he fired a shotgun, hitting Kouren-Rodney Bernard Thomas, 20, who was with a group outside his home.

Officers were dispatched just before 1 a.m., and Thomas was taken to WakeMed Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Copley was charged with murder and was being held Sunday at the Wake County Detention Center.

In the first in a series of 911 calls released by police, a man tells a 911 operator at 12:50 a.m. that there’s an emergency on Singleleaf Lane. “We’ve got a bunch of hoodlums out here. I’m locked and loaded, and I’m going outside to secure my neighborhood. You need to send PD as quickly as possible.”

The caller continues: “I’m going to secure my neighborhood. I’m on neighborhood watch. I’m gonna have the neighbors with me. There’s hoodlums out here racing up and down the street. It’s 1 o’clock in the morning, um, there’s some vandalism. They have firearms, and we’re going to secure our neighborhood. If I were you, I’d send PD as quickly as possible.” The operator talks over the caller trying to clarify where things are happening.

She asks whether the man can provide an address or an intersection on Singleleaf. He replies: “Negative, ma’am. It’s in Raleigh, North Carolina. PD can work with that. Thank you.” Then the call is cut off.

At 12:57 a.m., another person calls and urgently tells a 911 operator. “Someone just got shot. He stopped talking, stopped responding,” the caller says. “Someone shot him out of his house.”

Fifteen seconds after that, a woman and then the first male caller are on the phone again.

The operator asks where the emergency is and what happened. “3536 Singleleaf Lane,” the woman answers. “I don’t know. I’m upstairs with our children.”

Then the male caller tells the operator, “Yes, ma’am. We have a lot of people outside our house, yelling and shouting profanities. I yelled at them, ‘Please leave the premises.’ They were showing a firearm, so I fired a warning shot and, uh, we got somebody that got hit.”

“Someone was shot?” the operator asks.

“Well, I don’t know if they were shot or not, ma’am,” the male tells her. “I fired my warning shot like I’m supposed to by law. They do have firearms, and I’m trying to protect myself and my family.”

The operator asks who it was that came to his house.

“Ma’am, I don’t know who they are,” the man says. “There’s frigging black males outside my frigging house with firearms. Please send PD.” Then he hangs up.

Police have not disclosed where Thomas was when he was shot.

Copley was denied bail by Croom, who wished the man “good luck” before sheriff’s deputies led him out of the courtroom.

Copley whispered a few words to family members in the courtroom and blew a kiss to a woman who sat with the group.
