FAMU Police Chief Calvin Ross said six people are in custody after gun shots were fired near The Set, a popular student hangout.

"We're still trying to determine what exactly prompted this," Ross said. "We're still interviewing witnesses and have not talked to the suspects as of yet to determine what took place."

No one was injured in the shooting. One car has two bullet holes in it, Ross said. Four handguns have been confiscated.

The six people have not been charged in connection with the shooting, Ross said. But he added that charges are pending. It is not yet clear whether any of the six are students.

A text message went out about 1:47 p.m. alerting students to avoid The Set because the shots had been fired. Ross said the suspects were in custody within about three minutes.

The school was temporarily placed on lockdown.

"At this point, the scene is secure. All involved parties as we know it at this point are in custody," he said.

FAMU police have a person in custody after shots were reportedly fired on campus, according to Sherri Luke, an officer with the FAMU Police Department.

At least two people can be seen in the back of FAMU police vehicles. It is unclear why they are being held in the cars.

No one was injured in the gunfire, Luke said.

Traffic is being blocked on Gamble Street and Wahnish Way. The parking lot near the Set and the B.L. Perry building is being blocked off.

Monique Gillum, FAMU's student-government president, was contacting FAMU officials to see whether classes have been canceled.

Attempts to reach FAMU Police Chief Calvin Ross have been unsuccessful.
