Sheriff's deputy is caught on security video 'stealing two safes, a rifle case and ceiling fans' from a California home days after he had responded to the death of the elderly owner
  • Steve Hortz is a 12-year veteran of the Orange County Sheriff's Department
  • He is accused of breaking into the home in Yorba Linda three times in late-July and mid-August and making off with the dead man's property
  • Hortz responded to a 911 call at the home on July 20 about the death from natural causes of a man in his 70s, authorities said
  • He then returned and stole two safes, ceiling fans, a rifle case, authorities said
  • Home video footage captured Hortz returning on July 27 in his sheriff's uniform and breaking into the unoccupied home
  • The suspect was next seen breaking in to the property in the early hours of August 10 in civilian clothes before leaving the property carrying several items
  • Officials said Hortz next visited the home August 16 and made off with items
  • Hortz was arrested Thursday and booked on suspicion of burglary
  • He is currently on paid administrative leave from the Sheriff's Department
  • OC Sheriff Don Barnes vowed to make sure Hortz is stripped of his uniform, saying he has 'embarrassed this profession'

I'm more amazed that an experience cop couldn't spot a damn outdoor camera... you would think that's the first thing he would check and find ....

.... how dumb of a cop was he?
Some people do not just buy the average surveillance cameras. I do not know what kind this person had but I have seen some you will not noticed unless you was the one that put them there. I have seen some of the spy cameras, spy pens, etc. It seems the person that had the cameras installed had some money and maybe some hidden money also. But that was not that cop first time stealing.

Yes, that's true and now more the norm... but an experienced cop would be looking for signs of that whether it's connected through the lighting system or door ring... he was there to rob the house he could have at least double checked to ensure that ,especially now that it's the norm to have hidden cameras... however, it's good that he didn't because his dumb ass was caught and will no doubt go to prison.
