Gabriel Sarmiento, who trains WBC middleweight king Sergio Martinez, ripped eight-division champ, Manny Pacquiao, and, WBA junior middleweight (154 pounds) king, Miguel Cotto, for "fighting guys who are really almost one step away from retirement."

The current WBO welterweight and WBC junior middleweight champion, Pacquiao (52-3-2, 38 knockouts) will face Shane Mosley (46-6-1, 39 KOs) on May 7 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Cotto (35-2, 28 KOs) defends his belt on March 12 against Ricardo Mayorga (29-7-1, 22 KOs), and that will also be contested at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Martinez (46-2-2, 25 knockouts) will return on March 12 opposite WBO junior middleweight king Sergei Dzinziruk (37-0, 23 KOs) of Germany that will take place at the Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket, Conn.

"We're fighting a guy who is undefeated and who is at the top of the 154-pound weight class and who is really considered as one of the best fighters out there," Sarmiento told Elie Seckbach of FanHouse. "And if you're comparing us to Manny Pacquiao or Miguel Cotto, you know. I mean, these guys are fighting guys who are really almost one step away from retirement. We're starting strong, absolutely. We're starting very strong at the beginning of this year."

"We know that Sergei Dzinziruk is a very good technician. We know that we don't have an easy fight. But our goal, ultimately, is to become the best fighter in the world, pound-for-pound. And if we have to go to him to get to that point, then we've got to beat him and he's got to lose."

Dzinziruk huh? I've only seen him fight twice. Against Joel Julio and Daniel Santos. He's technically sound, tight defense, good quick right hook and jab which will be negated by Martinez being a southpaw also. He's a solid fighter but I don't think he's in Martinez class. I got Sergio stopping him in 8.

Never seen him, so I'll take your word for it.

Another one trying to talk himself into some money. Maybe 2011 won't be as pussified as 2010.

Why not? What have they to lose.

JMM vs. Katsidis was on tonight. I still pick that as Fight of the Year. Just better quality boxing from both guys as opposed to Khan-Maidana.

I agree, but I think they went with the drama factor over the skill factor as so often happens nowadays. I'm waiting for Donaire/Montiel, that fight has the potential of being a high skill barn burner. We talk about all these great fights that could be made but the lil guys are doing it and nobody is paying attention, I mean both those guys are ranked 5 and 6 respectively on the p4p list. The lighter weights are buzzing, the bantamweight tourney, the Montiel/Donaire matchup, with the winner to fight Mijares. 2011 might actually turn out to be a good year.

BTW, Roger Mayweather took a plea deal, so that clears one mess for Floyd. Now I'm pretty sure Floyd's lawyers will work his shit out and then he needs to get back in the ring. There's money to be made and ass to whup.

I'm peeping the lighter weights myself, but it is the oddest shit in the world how some how the smaller the fighters are the less interest people are in the fight.

On the Mayweather shit.... I was thinking it would be ironic if Roger gets off and they make Floyd do some time especially when last year it seemed like Floyd's next move depended on Roger's case.

If it was any other black athlete in Vegas they might make him do some time. But with the prospect of Mayweather/Pacquiao happening in Vegas and that town in the middle of what pretty much amounts to a depression, Floyd's fights are a big economic boost for a town that sorely needs it. Floyd will be back in the ring soon. I'd be truly surprised if they make him do time. Especially with Arum having Pac fight everywhere but Vegas. Floyd is the poster child for Vegas. Bad boy image, brash, loves to gamble. It's just a question of who his next opponent will be.
