Iconic Sen. Daniel Inouye, a Democrat who represented Hawaii on Capitol
Hill since it became a state in 1959, died at 5:01 p.m. Monday at the age
of 88 at Walter Reed National Medical Center from respiratory complications.

According to his office, Inouye's last word was "Aloha."

Inouye was a World War II veteran, a Medal of Honor recipient, Hawaii's
senior senator and the Senate's pro tempore. Senate Majortity Leader
Harry Reid, D-Nev., announced Inouye's passing on the Senate floor and
delivered moving remarks. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky.,
followed with his own reflections about Inouye's life and career.

The statement released by Inouye's office indicated that someone recently
asked the ailing senator to sum up his career.

"I represented the people of Hawaii and this nation honestly and to the
best of my ability," he responded. "I think I did OK."

"Go For Broke" Old Soldier.

The 442 Infantry was made up of mostly Japanese Americans with a few Chinese and Koreans (and Koreans who "passed" as Japanese). Their unit motto wasn't some fancy Latin or inspiring gobbledy gook. It was "Go For Broke" and they sure did.

There's a story, possibly apocryphal about an incident in Italy where a Marine Colonel, a veteran of bitter fights in Guadacanal and other small south Pacific islands was given a rest by being sent on a tour of US units in Europe.

He's in the middle of a conference when in the distance, he could hear "BANZAI!". He thought there was an Imperial Japanese Army unit in Italy and had to be restrained. The Army boys told him: "It's okay... Those are our Japs."

RIP and all that but why the fuck did he not retire years ago and help pick out a successor? This is one of those things that irks me to no end, how people in leadership, in government, civic groups and business, hold on forever like they don't know how the story ends and have pisspoor/no planning for who takes over next. It was like that with Ted Kennedy, Robert Byrd, and now Inouye and it's like that with the Nation of Islam (as much as I respect Minister Farrakhan, he should not still be the dominant face and voice of that group).
