I've been seeing the commercials for it since it came on but never watched it until last night. Had a episode where they were in the jungle and failed to build a fire before night time and mosquitoes was tearing they asses up while they was trying to sleep

Awww don't berate your mom over this because see was touched by the story. Depending on her age, she may actually remember the imitation of life movie. In the movies though, the daughters were light enough to be mistaken for white. Today it is seen as self hate, add then maybe also, but back then it was more a matter of economic survival. Black people were openly discriminated against, (still are in some places) and couldn't get hired if their parentage was known. I have an uncle on my dad's side of the family who "passed" for white. His kids knew but not the rest of his close family and friends.
This scenario was fake but the actual sentiment plays out in our community daily. Instead of the discussion taking a turn about people being mad about being deceived, I'd like to see a discussion about uplifting our daughters so they don't go though this. With the white beauty ideals in this society, and black men saying black women ain't shit, what is being done to protect their minds? I've seen plenty of videos on youtube and there was one talk show clip that went viral about this. I'll try to find it, but I think it was discussed on BGOL at the time.
