In january, BBC One announced that a 3rd season of Luther, the critically acclaimed psychological crime drama starring one Idris Elba, had been ordered!

And fans of the show everywhere were elated!

BBC head of drama Ben Stephenson confirmed that Luther had indeed been recommissioned for four more 60-minute episodes, just like season 2.

The BBC didn't reveal anything more than that, in terms of dates or content, although Idris did promise that there'd be even "more mayhem" in an interview.

Speaking to Radio 4 earlier today in London, creator/writer of the series, Neil Cross, said that this upcoming 3rd season would be the series' last; so no more Luther after season 3.

But if if makes you feel any better, he also said that the hope is that they are able to make the leap to the big screen after season 3 ends. This isn't the first time we've reported on a potential Luther movie; Idris first expressed his strong interest in that last summer, before season 2 aired in the USA, stating "the ultimate 'Luther' story will unfold on the big screen."

So clearly there's a push for that to happen; whether it will remains to be seen. I think with roles in 2 big budget Hollywood movies that'll be released over the next 12 months (Prometheus and Pacific Rim), Idris' stock could rise - at least awareness of him could broaden, which should only assist in getting backing for a Luther big screen leap. Plus he has a Golden Globe win, and he just might get another next year (or at least be nominated) after season 3 runs its course.

But back to Neil Cross... he revealed some other noteworthy items related to the series, like how the series will eventually end:

“The final scene of the final episode is great and we wouldn’t want to continue. I love an ending. I have a weakness for a powerful and moving ending. We’ll go out big and leave it at that.”

Cross also talked about how he created the character - specifically, whether he always intended for Luther to be a black man:

“It was cast as a character, purely and simply, which is one of the aspects that attracted Idris to the role. I have no knowledge or expertise or right to try to tackle in some way the experience of being a black man in modern Britain. It would have been an act of tremendous arrogance for me to try to write – and you have to try to imagine the quote marks around the words – a black character because I don’t know what a black character is and we would have ended up with a slightly embarrassed, ignorant, middle-class, white writer’s idea of a black character, which would have been an embarrassment for everybody concerned. I suspect that there’s a dearth of decent roles for black actors because most writers are white and they try to write their idea of black and it’s an embarrassment.”

Hell yeah! Good for Idris an if theres a movie even better! Cant wait!

Bullshit, if Idris didn't have a successful movie career to jungle they would have more eps. 3 seasons is fine with me

Very true:yes:

They r making it only 3 series because Americans r gonna remake it(they r already remaking 3-4 british shows right now...smh) and don't want much comp and dude has a big movie career.

I haven't finished the audible book yet but it reveals so much about why he is how he is and how the events leading up to series one happened. Its a shame Neil Cross won't make that into a series. Luther is such a tragic figure. I'm gonna finish the audiobook then rewatch series 1 & 2.

Cause the Brits aren't greedy bastards like the Americans and don't run shows down to the ground in an effort to squeeze more $ out of it. See The Simpsons or The X-Files for reference.

 Man their shows last even LONGER than american shows. I seen a rip for a UK show the other day talking about season 25. Also Shameless and Skins been on a while too. I like their approach with their shows but they are just as "greedy". They feel like theirs more money in producing more shows than producing the same show every year.

 UK shows aren't competition for America. If Idris wants to make another Luther it will happen. The UK Being Human is airing at the same time as the Amerifcan Being Human. They are are on different nights.

i think the current season of Skins airing now has been confirmed to be the show's last, though they said there will be some"reunion" film specials next year

the original being human cast left in the uk, except 4 the black chick. The story is now different. The being human on syfy has a different storyline as well. Luther is Idris. A black lead in the USA? They wanna make him "Americanized" and white, but it won't be successful with the UK Luther killing them. Same thing happened with Skins. They tried to make it so radical it sucked compared to the original and was cancelled.
A lot of the remakes they are making now got cancelled in the Uk or changed radically so they can't be compared.
U know how Americans r. They wanna make Luther a white man, add a black sidekick or drug fiend and a gay character and tell ppl it's new.

British seasons are shorter than US seasons. US shows run 13 or 22 episodes per season. How many episodes was Misfits, Shameless, or Luther?

3 seasons of Luther equals one US one-hour drama season.

i don't mind that season 3 will be the final season but damn, another 4 episode series? the first was 6 then when i downloaded the 2nd season i thought i was missing some episodes (i downloaded both seasons at 1 time). i will admit that they pack a lot in w/ in each episode so i guess that's the difference.

yes it will be the last because they have ran that show down to the ground. I couldn't even watch the last season
