Seahawks Considering National Anthem Protest As A Team

In the fourth week of the preseason, two other NFL players joined Colin Kaepernick in sitting out the playing of the “Star-Spangled Banner”: his 49ers teammate Eric Reid, and Seahawks CB Jeremy Lane. Lane said he will continue his protest into the regular season, but he may not be alone.

Receiver Doug Baldwin said after practice yesterday that he is considering joining Lane in sitting for the anthem on Sunday, when Seattle opens up its season at home against the Dolphins, but that he first wants “to make sure I get all of my ducks in a row before I do so.” What does that mean? Baldwin said it has been discussed in the locker room, and LB Bobby Wagner intimated that any protest would be made en masse.

While Wagner said he didn’t know if he would sit down during the anthem he said “anything we want to do, it’s not going to be individual. It’s going to be a team thing. That’s what the world needs to see. The world needs to see people coming together versus being individuals.”

Wagner said he couldn’t say exactly what the team might do, saying “whatever we decide to do will be a big surprise.”

It sounds like the Seahawks are being thoughtful about precisely how to express their call for attention to the racial inequality in America, without giving the disingenuous any potential distractions. Colin Kaepernickaccomplished that last week, consulting with former Army Green Beret and Seahawks training camp invitee Nate Boyer before changing his manner of protest to a kneel—simultaneously respectful and symbolic.

Sunday’s games will have more than its typical share of Americana—it is the 15th anniversary of the September 11th attacks on New York and Washington. (We should note again that protesting the anthem has nothing to do with the military—nor did Sept. 11, really, at least not in the way most commemorations portray it as the day to remember “those who keep us safe.” The unnecessary wars that used Sept. 11 as a pretext are a different story, and we should remember those for what they are. Pat Tillman would’ve liked that.) Doug Baldwin says the added significance of the date magnifies the message rather than distracts from it.

“I think that anybody should be thinking about that,” Baldwin said. “Even if it wasn’t Sept. 11, the point of the protest is to get people to think.

“I think it’s very ironic that 15 years ago on Sept. 11 is one of the most devastating times in U.S. history, and after that day we were probably the most unified that we’ve ever been,” he continued. “And today you struggle to see the unity.”

September 11th aside, please remember that the most overt political statement made at NFL games this season will be the very playing of the anthem, and not the choice to refrain from standing.

should have kept it in house & then just do it...fuck them cac`s...

who da fuck leaked they considering it...smh...takes away from it now if they do do it....

Seahawks to stand, interlock arms during anthem

Doug Baldwin promised the Seattle Seahawks would plan a demonstration of "unity" during the national anthem before Sunday's season opener against the Miami Dolphins on Sept. 11.

On Saturday, Baldwin revealed the team's plan to stand and interlock arms.

"We are a team comprised of individuals with diverse backgrounds," Baldwin said in the video. "And as a team, we have chosen to stand and interlock arms in unity. We honor those who have fought for the freedom we cherish. And we stand to ensure that the riches of freedom, and the security of justice for all people. Progress can and will be made only if we stand together."

Colin Kaepernick's decision to sit during the national anthem to protest social injustice against African-Americans and other minorities in the United States has found support among NFL players.

Seahawks cornerback Jeremy Lane sat during the national anthem prior to Seattle's final preseason contest against the Raiders. Lane told reporters he wanted to show support for Kaepernick's protest and several of his Seahawks teammates publicly supported his decision.

On Sunday, the entire Seattle team will show their support in unity on the 15th anniversary of 9/11. The Seahawks kick off against the Dolphins at 4:05 p.m. ET.

Niggas about to go out there and do what teams already do when the captains walk out for the coin toss. What does this symbolize? That you're together as a team? we fucking know that already
huge disappointment.
they might as well had come out pre game in inside jerseys and then put them on the 50 yard line

High school players taking knee for national anthem across country

Colin Kaepernick’s gesture to kneel for the national anthem was repeated by high school players in a number of places before games Friday night.

Kaepernick retweeted a number of posts on Twitter with photos or news stories.

Here is a sampling:

  • At Lincoln Southeast in Nebraska, two players — one white, one African-American took a knee as a silent protest. (see the video above).
  • At Waggener High in Louisville, a player took a knee as his teammates stood alongside him. A number of players had taken a knee as the team line up but eventually rose as the music starting playing. Coach Jordan Johnson said the team will take steps before next week’s game to “to ensure our young men can make a stand for social injustice, while at the same time not showing, what is perceived as, disrespect.” (Click here for more of Waggener’s response.)

  • Many players at Maury High in Norfolk, Va., took a knee behind the end zone when the anthem was played. Others stood at attention as did the coaches. “Our school system has said, we’re of the belief, we let our guys do what they believe in,”Coach Chris Fraser told the Virginian Pilot. “And so we didn’t make an issue of it, and if they believe in a cause, that’s fine. I stand behind what they believe in, but I’m going to do what I believe in.”

  • At Auburn High in Rockford, Ill., a number of players took a knee during the anthem while their teammates stood with their hands over their hearts

  • Here is another photo at school in Minneapolis.

  • Players at Watkins Hills High in Montgomery, Md., also took a knee during the anthem, according to a photo provided to USA TODAY High School Sports.

LOL stand and interlock arms. they do that shit already

Yup

Ok they want to REALLY impress me?

Interlock your arms and strike for an entire season when this current cba is up.

I'll be here waiting....

I'll just dip into this candy dish filled with Addarall in the locker room while I'm here...

Great point..

I understand the colonists are unhappy...

But to disrespect the harbor like that?

Innocent fish.

The hard working fisherman and sailors who risk their lives to bring us fish and supplies use the harbor to live.

It's shameful.

You can protest but don't disrespect the harbor.

Seahawks To Stand, Lock Arms During National Anthem

The Seattle Seahawks will present a united front during the playing of the national anthem prior to Sunday’s season opener against the Miami Dolphins.

Wide receiver Doug Baldwin unveiled the team’s plans via a video posting on his Twitter page, saying the Seahawks “have chosen to stand and interlock arms in unity.”

Baldwin said the idea was hatched among his teammates in the wake of San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick’s decision to kneel during the anthem in the preseason as a protest of social inequality.

Seahawks cornerback Jeremy Lane kneeled for the anthem during the final preseason game, calling his gesture a measure of support for Kaepernick. That sparked a debate among Seattle’s players on how they would proceed.

“We are a team comprised of individuals with diverse backgrounds,” Baldwin explained in the video.

“We honor those who have fought for the freedom we cherish. And we stand to ensure that the riches of freedom, and the security of justice for all people. Progress can and will be made only if we stand together.”

Sunday’s game is the 15th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. As part of pregame ceremonies, the Seahawks will honor all branches of the military along with local police, firefighters and EMTs.

With emotions expected to be so high, Baldwin on Friday told local media that it was “absolutely amazing” in how the team came to such a decision to interlock arms.

“It makes me want to cry almost, just how our team has handled this and the discussions we’ve had and how we’ve come together,” Baldwin said.
