Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer has confirmed an earlier report on BoxingScene.com, regarding the possibility of Victor Ortiz (29-3-2, 22KOs) challenging WBC 154-pound champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (40-0-1, 29KOs) on September 15th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Ortiz, a former WBC welterweight champion, was always considered a big, strong fighter at 140. Ortiz's last two fights took place at 147-pounds and he certainly retained his power and physical strength with the move in weight.

Physically, Canelo and Ortiz are very similar. Both boxers stand at 5'9 and Canelo has a one-inch reach advantage - 71 to 70. Canelo would have the edge in power, with Ortiz being the quicker of the two. In terms of their styles matching up, a knockout ending is certainly a bet worth taking.

"That would be a barnburner. If Canelo would fight Victor Ortiz - it can only be an exciting fight. That would be one of those fights that going into, where you can probably leave the judges at home and based on what we've seen on Saturday [with Pacquiao-Bradley] - that might be a good thing," Schaefer told BoxingScene.com.

However, there is still some unfinished business before Ortiz can fully focus on a fight with Canelo. On June 23rd at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, Ortiz will face the very durable Josesito Lopez (29-4, 17KOs) in a Showtime televised main event.

 im looking forward to this . im going to cross my finger and hope something doesnt happen to it

The summer had a lot of great fights on deck and most of them didn't happen for different reason but if they can make this happen, the fall would kick off in a great way.

So look for Lopez to score the upset to fuck it up.:D

Victor isn't sniffing the atmosphere Canelo is in right now. I don't see the point of giving this quitter more tv time. shitty predictable fight.

Oh yeah, Canelo beating Mosley put him in rarefied air huh? Victor has fought better fighters and been in bigger and better fights than Canelo. Actually Ortiz has done the things that Canelo wants to do. So how exactly is Canelo so above Ortiz right now?

Canelo is not top 10. However Ortiz is a proven flop. Ortiz is being fed to the wolves if you ask me. Canelo has poise. He does get frustrated. He stick with his plan and executes it well. But that is how I see it. I don't get the praise y'all give to some cats. Dude quit in the ring and then had a breakdown in the ring. He has already shown he can't handle shit when it gets tough. But like I said. That is my opinion. How many times has Ortiz defended a belt? Ortiz actually has been in one big fight. The Berto fight wasn't big until afterwards. At that time Berto had a belt, but he was no top guy.

You know a nigga who was on Margarito's nuts can't talk about whether a boxer is worthy of big fights or not.

I think this fight should be held at Staples Center, hell even Dodgers Stadium. If Canelo can draw 15,000+ fighting Matthew Hatton in SoCal, I don't see how these two wouldn't draw 25,000+. I would DEFINITELY be in attendance if the fight was held in L.A.

I will say this though... I'm not feeling this on PPV. The undercard would have to be crack for me to even consider fucking with it.

I actually agree with the whole quitter thing. But you must admit that Maidana, Peterson, Berto and Mayweather are way above anyone that Canelo has fought. I see this fight as fire and ice. Ortiz is a wild dude, he's been through some shit and it's made him unpredictable. Canelo has been cool and calm in the ring and showed great poise but look at who he's done that against, Cintron, Baldomir and Mosley are the biggest names on his resume. Ortiz has the style to possibly make Canelo really have to fight and let's not forget that dude is not without skill, power and speed. It's just his mental makeup that I've always questioned.

:lol::lol::lol:
After the cancellations of Peterson-Khan, Berto-Ortiz II, and Alvarez-Williams, I just don't expect anything good to happen this summer/fall.

So Lopez in the upset.:D

Boxing loves big crowds and it always looks good on tv.
That would put a dent in the "boxing is dead/dying" crowd...if they paid attention to any fight outside a Mayweather or Pacquiao fight.

this has the potential to be a Goody foreal  Ortiz need to redeem himself after that dumd shit he pulled against Lil Floyd.. I hope they fight @ 150+ so both dudes are in there fully armed (no homo)

I gotta say "no mas" to the quitter bullshit. How the fuck does that matter if the motherfucker keeps fighting and still takes on challenges? I wrote Ortiz off against Berto and he proved me wrong so fuck it.

Then this is coming from a motherfucker who made a big deal about a delusional belief he had in his head that Floyd ducked Kostya Tszyu when Kostya quit his boxing career on the stool fighting a guy slightly above a bum.

Yeah I hear you but quitting is part of his makeup. Dude did it against Maidana and the blatant headbutt/meltdown against Floyd was a form of quitting as well. But, he's still a good young fighter. Everything else your saying though, I agree with.

As far as the whole Tszyu thing though....:hmm:

The headbutt wasn't about quitting to me. I never said dude is stable. It is like Tyson biting Holyfields ear... Tyson would have kept fighting in my mind, but some where in his crazy mind he thought people would understand. Ortiz was frustrated and lost his shit because he is off, not because he wanted out of the fight.

Maidana put the hurt on that dude and he couldn't take it. That is some bitch shit but you can't count out a motherfucker completely out off that moment of weakness if they keep going. Until dude starts looking like Zab in there... He can have the benefit of the doubt in mind that he is a fighter looking to go hard each time.

I hear you, and I pretty much feel the way you do except I'm still not sold completely on him not being a quitter. Dude is definitely off though, I been saying that for a minute. But I do believe he's a legit threat to Canelo and I'd love to see him get back on track, it would add yet another good young fighter to 147-154lb divisions.

Yeah, time will tell. I like this fight and whoever wins gets a nice little boost in popularity and if the PPV sells well... They will also step to the front of the line of that Floyd lottery.

Dude is a quitter. I don't think he is a threat. Hell he my suffer another emotional breakdown this weekend. If this fight between Ortiz and Canelo is a good fight to you guys. Then I look forward seeing the results. I expect Ortiz to do something stupid a after a long night of hard jabs to the face. Expecting a DQ.
