The deal for junior middleweight titlist Saul "Canelo" Alvarez to make his third defense against former welterweight titleholder Kermit Cintron on Nov. 26 has been finalized, Golden Boy promoter Richard Schaefer told ESPN.com on Tuesday night.

Alvarez and Cintron will meet in the main event of a "Boxing After Dark" split-site tripleheader on HBO, Schaefer said.

"It's finalized. It's a great fight, another dangerous fight for Canelo and another step up for him," Schaefer said.

Schaefer said that the site was not finalized yet, but added that the fight would take place in Mexico, Alvarez's home country, where he is a major star.

"We are working on the venue, either Mexico City or Cancun," Schaefer said.

The other two bouts on the telecast will come from Cincinnati, where hometown fighter Adrien Broner (21-0, 17 KOs) will fight for a vacant junior lightweight belt against an opponent to be determined, likely Argentina's Vicente Rodriguez (34-2-1, 19 KOs), with blue chip featherweight prospect Gary Russell (18-0, 10 KOs), a 2008 U.S. Olympian, opening the show against an opponent to be named.

Alvarez, 21, won a vacant 154-pound belt in March with a shutout decision win against Matthew Hatton. Alvarez followed with a similarly dominant 12th-round knockout of Ryan Rhodes in June. In his second defense, Alvarez had some trouble with Alfonso Gomez, but stopped him in the sixth round on Sept. 17 on the Los Angeles portion of the Floyd Mayweather Jr.-Victor Ortiz split-site HBO PPV card.

Despite Cintron's recent uneven performances, the 31-year Houston-based Puerto Rico native is still a step up for Alvarez (38-0-1, 28 KOs). Cintron (33-4-1, 28 KOs) lost back-to-back fights -- to Paul Williams in May 2010 and then to Carlos Molina in July in a major upset -- before outpointing Antwone Smith in August to end his skid.

"There is no question about it that Cintron is a very dangerous guy," Schaefer said. "That's what you need to do with Canelo. He's 21 years young and this is about building up to the bigger names and bigger fights. Canelo is well on his way. I think our matchmakers, Eric (Gomez) and Roberto (Diaz), along with (Golden Boy president) Oscar (De La Hoya), who is closely involved in this, have done a very good job on the matchmaking side. To tell you the truth, I'm a little worried because Cintron is a tough, tough, tough guy and a good puncher."

Easy fight for Saul. Kermit looked horrible in his last fight and the fight before that (the rocket jump out of the ring).

True, but I actually like how they are grooming him. they are giving him different types of opponents with decent exposure but moving him slow enough, as far as the level of comp is concerned, that he is actual building up his resume, but at same time he is fight often enough that he won't waste his prime years and trying to cash in at the end. Basically he proving himself as worth for the next level... instead of jumping in with the sharks early and simply sinking or swimming on that one shot. If he loses to a top guy later he will still have so much capital from beating a large amount of comp that he could easily bounce back.

after that performance against Gomez I don't think we will see easy fights for Canelo....his opposition now is determined to make a name for themselves...& he still has alot of holes in his game....

I wouldn't be surprised if he gets pushed hard by Cintron or even loses...

he just fought a month ago another fight so soon?

I don't know. Canelo is over hyped a bit but he is solid though. It should be a good fight, but I give the advantage to the mexi-irishman.

Gomez deserves a rematch though.

About fighting so soon. Why not? Old school did it that way. His last fight was kind of short and didn't get hurt? I think more young should fight more often like thi.

Canelo is only 21 with 40 pro fights....he has experience but still has holes in his game....

IMO they should take more time off to improve his skills....the fighters he will be facing now will be more difficult....I think its too soon especially after that last performance....

You may be right about brushing up on fundamentals, but most fighters have holes in their game that they will never overcome. I think the ring experience may force him to adapt, but being beat by Cintron... I don't see it. Dude had some promise once, but I haven't seen much of it lately.

IDK famo....when Canelo fought a determined fighter (Gomez) he look like a deer in headlights...you are right Gomez deserves another shot that was bullshit how they stop that fight

his opposition is getting better now...& cats know they can make a name for themselves beating a potential star....he is going to to see more Gomez type fights IMO...

thats why I think he needs to take a long lay off if you can't fix the holes in your game invite other trainers sparring partners to Mexico or train at other camps to learn new skills...

he is only 21 after that last performance why are they so quick to throw him in another fight 2 months later....:smh:

this won't be an easy fight...win or lose...

I think is kind of the point he doesn't need the easiest fight, but I predict maybe 3-4 good early rounds from Cintron and then a beat down. I maybe wrong, but fuck it... we get a extra fight to look forward to before the end of the year.
