Rick Santorum: We might as well have four more years of President Obama than ‘Etch a Sketch’ Mitt Romney

This quarrel is just the latest salvo in the bruising, drawn-out primary fight that will likely continue in the months ahead as the candidates try to stop Romney from garnering magic 1,144 delegates needed to cinch the nomination

Rick Santorum is so down on Mitt Romney that he'd rather have four more years of Barack Obama than some "Etch A Sketch" president.

The Republican White House hopeful made the argument during a campaign stop in San Antonio on Thursday. He repeated his claim that Romney is not conservative enough, and only he offers Americans a clear alternative.

"You win by giving people a choice. You win by giving people the opportunity to see a different vision for our country, not someone who's just going to be a little different than the person in there," the former Pennsylvania senator said.

He continued: If they're going to be a little different, we might as well stay with what we have instead of taking a risk of what may be the Etch A Sketch candidate for the future."

Santorum was referring to Team Romney's latest campaign gaffe, in which the ex-Massachusetts governor's top aide, Eric Fehrnstrom, compared the campaign shift from the primary battle to the general election to an Etch A Sketch.

"You can kind of shake it up and we start all over again," Fehrnstrom told CNN earlier this week, igniting criticism from GOP opponents and Dems alike that Romney is a flip-flopper and will do or say anything to win.

This quarrel is just the latest salvo in the bruising, drawn-out primary fight that will likely continue in the months ahead as the candidates try to stop Romney from garnering magic 1,144 delegates needed to cinch the nomination.

Romney is ahead of the pack -and almost to the halfway point -with 563 delegates following his big win in Illinois his week, according to the AP. Santorum is in second with 263. Newt Gingrich and Ron Paul trail with 135 and 50, respectively.

Romney ripped Santorum's criticism of him in a statement, arguing "this election is more important than any one person…Any of the Republicans running would be better than President Obama and his record of failure."

Newt Gingrich repeated the sentiment on Twitter, writing "Rick Santorum is dead wrong. Any GOP nominee will be better than Obama."

The latest polls show Santorum poised for a double-digit win in the Louisiana primary on Saturday.

But a new Gallup poll shows Romney maintaining a slight edge over Santorum nationally-34% to 28% -- among likely GOP voters.

Damn.

This is how the primary is killing Romney and his chances. They're depending on the Right's hatred of Obama to unify the base behind whoever wins but that is not enough to make them turn out to vote, Kerry's loss to Bush shows that. Hatred of Bush wasn't enough to get people to vote for Kerry.

'cuse me for a second while I

Welp.... the GOP is imploding again. Obama's campaign team must be salivating over all these awesome soundbites they'll get to run during the general election.

But it's still imperative for groups to fight the voter suppression bills that are meant to steal states in the general and make sure they get people out to vote when the time comes or we will be stuck with a party in charge that is beholden to the Tea Parties.

Those grimy motherfuckers are doing everything in their power to disenfranchise low income, college and minority voters again.

Ohio is going to be a scary place this November. Crazy ass WAWs are more likely to go to the polls than rational Obama supporters(or people who just don't want the GOP in). People will be sitting at home like :D" I don't have to vote, no way people vote for that batshit(insert GOP candidate)!!"

The thing that is going to hurt Obama in 2012 is the fact that he should win.

I see that as a weakness too. Hopefully, for your state, Kasich will be a great galvanizing force for the Left to come out in force to vote. Local/state issues do get people out to the polls.

Is this real? I can't believe he said it but that's like political suicide for him within his party. They are going to crush him. Wow!

Well there goes his chance of being vice president.

True. State and local issues will be important. It is the only way I see a heavy turnout for Obama. Nobody is taking this shit seriously. Romney?  This biggest advantage the GOP has is the fact they look like a joke and the Obama won't enjoy the same "newness" factor he had in 2008.

The chance to elect the first Black President does have a better ring to it than "Re-elect the first Black President".

GOP candidate Rick Santorum says he would join Mitt Romney on ticket if asked

image.jpg

Rick Santorum may be ranting about the potential for Mitt Romney to be an Etch-a-Sketch-in-Chief — but that doesn’t mean the conservative wouldn’t be his running mate.

“Of course,” the former Pennsylvania Sen. responded when a reporter for the Christian Broadcasting Network asked him Monday what he would say if Romney asked him to join the ticket.

“As I always say, this is the most important race in our country’s history. I’m going to do everything I can. I’m doing everything I can.”

The No. 2 in the sweepstakes for the GOP nomination reasoned that he’d be open to being Romney’s veep candidate because he can’t stomach a second term for President Obama.

“I don't want to be the guy who has to sit with my granddaughter, 20 years from now, and tell stories about an America where people once were free. I don't want to have that conversation,” he said.

Santorum’s comments were an about-face to his statement last week that he’d rather see Obama reelected because the former Massachusetts governor wasn’t anywhere near as conservative as he claims to be — and was liable to moderate his opinions, as one of his staffers flat-out admitted.

That comment earned Santorum criticism from Team Romney, who had a top staffer say in an interview that the hard-charging conservative was trying to cut down the front-runner so he would lose to Obama, making the White House race in 2016 an open contest.

But even as Santorum was saying Monday that he’d consider playing second fiddle to his chief rival, Santorum recycled his argument that Romney is “uniquely disqualified” to challenge Obama.

His position is that the GOP, if it nominates Romney, would cede the ability to attack Obama on his health care law — known as Obamacare — because as governor of the Bay State he fought hard to pass a similar law, known as Romneycare.

“The Republican establishment in this city wants to nominate somebody that will take away that issue,” Santorum told CBN.

On the campaign trail Monday, Santorum also defended himself for unloading a cart of “bull---t” on a reporter for The New York Times a day earlier.

His reasoning: Any good conservative who hasn’t had a flareup with the liberal broadsheet “isn’t worth their salt.”

Santorum, who continues to maintain he won’t drop from the race, charged that the reporter was trying to distort a speech in which he called Romney “the worst Republican in the country to put up against Obama.”

Santorum railed against the reporter — all caught on camera Sunday at a Wisconsin campaign stop — when asked to further explain the pointed critique.

“Stop lying,” Santorum charged. “Quit distorting my words.... If I see it, it’s bull---t.”

He told CNN Monday: “I mean, I was talking about Obamacare, Romneycare.... [Romney] wrote the blueprint for Obamacare.”

But Romney got in the final word, saying Santorum’s outburst was typical of a floundering candidate.

“I’m not going to worry too much about what Rick is saying these days,” Romney told CNN. “I know when you’re following further and further behind, you get a little more animated.”
