Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) on Wednesday said the nation owes an apology for slavery.

“As a nation — I don’t think as a president, but as a nation — we have got to apologize for slavery,” the 2016 Democratic presidential contender told host Joe Madison on Sirius XM’s “The Black Eagle.”

“As a nation we have got to apologize for slavery, and of course the president is the leader of the nation,” he added.

Sanders said that slavery had caused too much suffering to remain unaddressed.
“Obviously nobody in this generation was involved in slavery,” Sanders said.

“But as a nation, slavery is one of the abominations that our country has experienced," he continued. "There is no excuse — what can we say about it?”

“It was horrific,” he added. “It killed millions of people who never made it even across the ocean. It destroyed the lives of so many people.”

Sanders has been attracting large crowds at his campaign events, spurring the campaign of Hillary Clinton, the front-runner for the nomination, to express worry about his surge in support.

With polls show him closing the gap with Clinton in early-voting states, Sanders is beginning to make a play for minority voters crucial to Democratic candidates.

Sanders in the interview said the economic issues he is pushing to address, such as income inequality, would benefit minority communities, including African-Americans.

“We are talking about raising the minimum wage not to $10 an hour, but $15 an hour, over the period of a few years,” he said.

“We are talking about providing — fighting for — a national healthcare program which guarantees healthcare to all of our people.”

“I think the economic agenda that we are outlying will impact very positively all working people in this country, especially people who are being hit the hardest right now, which is people in the African American community.”

Sanders in the interview also voiced disappointment over comedian Bill Cosby, who is facing sexual assault allegations.

“Well, I think it’s a tragedy,” Sanders said of the allegations against Cosby.

“It appears that the allegations are true, and that’s the reality.”

I wish this guy could win! But unfortunately our country is not ready for this type of truth!

This guy has raised almost as much money as Hillary and he has no super pac and has done very few fundraisers.

The media is not covering him and trying to make him disappear but he has a shot if people actually vote for him instead of thinking he has no shot.

I know Bearnie probably means well, but seriously, FUCK THEIR APOLOGY!

Apology will make it seem all is well, but these CACs needs to change their fuckin ways and the got damn system they benefit from.

That is unlikely, so fuck an apology.

I'm still gonna support the nigga....even though I don't believe in the political process

I feel you but an apology is a start because it is an admission of wrongdoing. When you have people saying slavery was good for us and helped us advance there is definitely some who need to admit wrongdoing first

I get it and it's not a slight to him, but white guilt should feast on these CACs souls forever. Imagine the stuff you would hear if their is a formal apology from the government and CACs are still acting up.

They're going to be like "why are you still mad? We apologized. Let just move on".

I may see an apology different than some, but many times apologies are use to shut people up. But maybe you're right as well. I'm just not as trusting to these Devils man. We've been bamboozled way too many times, historically, post slavery.

Trust, I'm ALL for reparations.

Do you guys understand why America is hell bent on NOT apologizing? One opens the door to the other.

Does it really? Because I fail to see what door that opens. Please enlighten me if I'm missing something (I'm not being an asshole, btw).

Genuine question.

Yup, don't even have to really mean it. Just fall on the sword, act contrite, and the forgiveness part is on the other person. Youve "done your part." Every guy in here does this shit with their lady... So you already know how it goes.

It seems like America feels that if they apologize for slavery, they're admitting culpability, and that would mean that they're going to have to break bread for us, like they did the Japanese Americans during WWII, and paying us back would be a HELLUVA lot more than what they had to pay the Japs. Not only would they have to take responsibility for slavery, they'd also have to take responsibility for everything that followed it (Jim Crow, etc.) and its effect on us. They paid the Japs, and gave the Natives casinos and certain federal perks. Truth is, they can't afford to pay us what they owe! They've "acknowledged" that it was wrong, they've never apologized, and they never will. Apologizing is like that loose thread on a sweater. Once you pull it, it could unravel the whole thing. Btw, asking a question doesn't make you an asshole, fam.

Ok, I get that your point. And it make sense when you put it that way.

But the damage is so severely done, that we have lost generations of people that has fell victim to racism. Those effects has led us to a point of miseducation that many will only see reparations as an income tax return. I don't see how a formal apology works. What they gave the natives didn't improve their situation. It only hushed them up. The Japs have no connection with this country other than immigration and willfully coming to here, so they came up. Plus they get to go back home whenever they want to because they have a country of their own.

That's what I fear about these so called reparations, because it's not going to fix the underlying issues we face, which starts with proper education and oppurtunties that we barely have, now of days.

I don't know about you, fam, but I cut my loose strings with a scissor to keep my sweaters intact. That's what their apology means to me. Them unravelling is not going to happen because as you said, they can't afford it. We are waaaaaaaay past being apologized to.

No trust at all from me...But today most of them don't even acknowledge they did anything wrong....An apology is an admission of guilt/wrongdoing.

Apologizes are nothing but words and plays on emotions. It's like making a promise and breaking it. You ain't got to mean it. Bearnie and like-minded whites like him may mean it, but the people who are in control ain't having it.

And technically many haven't, but that doesn't excuse them from benefitting from their ancestors. The history has been altered at a rate faster than we probably even noticed. They don't even really understand what slavery done or even understand it. So I see a natural fit back or confusion on why they have to.

Some of them have known and always have but they get pushed to the back.. Let's not forget that some of them were down with Tubman too.
