Rumor: Google's next phone will be made by Samsung and run Android 4.0

New information regarding Google's next Nexus phone has been revealed. BGR reported earlier this month that they received exclusive information regarding the first handset running Android 4.0, code-named Ice Cream Sandwich. Today they've come back with some even more confirmed details. Apparently, the next halo Android device will be dubbed 'Nexus Prime' and will feature a Super AMOLED HD display. This, of course, indicates that the manufacturer can only be Samsung. The handset, like its Honeycomb cousins, will be completely devoid of hardware buttons and will instead rely purely on on-screen controls. To follow up on earlier rumors, the new flagship device is confirmed to be driven by a TI OMAP 4460 processor. TI's website lists feature such as 1080p recording and playback, dual core Cortex A9 internals, and a maximum clock speed of 1.5 GHz. Reportedly, the screen will be capable of displaying 720p content at its native resolution making it the highest resolution display for this type of device. In addition, it will be carrying a five megapixel shooter out back that is supposed to outperform anything we've seen on a phone yet.

That's not all, however. Unlike the launches of Android 2.0 with the DROID and Android 3.0 with the XOOM, the launch of Android 4.0 will not be exclusive to one device on one carrier. Instead, Google is said to be working with multiple manufacturers across multiple carriers to release several Ice Cream Sandwich based flagship devices at or around the same time.

Google’s first Ice Cream Sandwich phone to be manufactured by Samsung, possibly dubbed ‘Nexus Prime’

We exclusively reported details of Google’s first Ice Cream Sandwich smartphone — either a Nexus device, or a “pure Google” flagship handset from one of Google’s key partners — and we now have more information surrounding the world’s most anticipated Android phone. We reported that the handset would nix physical menu keys going forward, and would feature a monster 720p -resolution display, and we have now confirmed with our source that the screen itself is branded as a “Super AMOLED HD” display. The branding confirms our suspicions that Samsung will indeed be the manufacturer. We have also confirmed that the processor in the upcoming device will be an OMAP4460, just as we originally reported. Hit the jump for more.

This upcoming superphone will not have any carrier preloads or OEM customizations, which goes without saying for a Nexus phone or a reference/flagship Android offering. The current codename is “Prime”, and our source believes it’s possible that the phone could launch as the “Google Nexus Prime.” We also have information that Google’s onslaught of high-end Android devices isn’t going to stop anytime soon. With the Motorola DROID and Motorola XOOM, Google launched its flagship Android devices with one carrier and one OEM, but we’re hearing things might be switched up this time around. Our source indicated that Google could be working with multiple carriers and multiple OEMs on their own “exclusive” Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) halo devices, and that they may all launch around the same time.

Imagine flagship releases from Motorola, HTC, and LG with Ice Cream Sandwich available on AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon Wireless, and Sprint all at practically the same time… in addition to a Google Nexus handset from Samsung. The summer’s going to be hot, but it looks like the fall might get even hotter.

and i'm gonna wait to see if verizon doesn't block the nexus prime... if they do i'll go to sprint unless I get a compelling alternative

Google's getting ready for that iPhone5 drop. Will there be a W8 this fall or winter, or are they gonna go with a 7.X?

damn i was waiting for the galaxy s2 to drop

i may just wait even longer to replace my evo (and put sense 3.o right now on my shit) until this drops

I was hoping for LG or HTC

Pass on Samsung

Don't sleep. I just got the Samsung infuse and it is outstanding in every way. The only reason that I may return it is because of the size. You almost always need 2 hands to operate it.

The only thing I like about Samsung are the displays, pass on everything else.
