Mitt Romney, Offshore

Romney Shocked that Democrats
Would Question his Offshore Accounts

The Romney campaign was offended when Democrats used the Sunday talk shows to question Romney's Swiss bank accounts. The Romney campaign issued a statement saying just how offended they were that the Obama campaign would question his offshore accounts. They called the questioning "unseemly and disgusting," and accused the President of being a bully:

"The Obama campaign’s latest unfounded character assault on Mitt Romney is unseemly and disgusting. Mitt Romney had a successful career in the private sector, pays every dime of taxes he owes, has given generously to charitable organizations, and served numerous causes greater than himself. Barack Obama has become what he once ran against – a typical politician willing to use false and dishonest attacks to save his job after failing to do his job. The American people expected more from this president, and he continues to let them down."

The Dems came out hard against Romney's questionable finance history on Sunday. Senior Obama campaign advisor Robert Gibbs said instead of 'Believe in America,' Romney's campaign slogan "should be 'Business In Bermuda'" on State of the Union. Debbie Wasserman Schultz said, "Americans need to ask themselves: why does an American businessman need a Swiss bank account and secretive investments like that?" on Fox News Sunday. Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley said "I’ve never known of a Swiss bank account to build an American bridge, a Swiss bank account to create American jobs, or a Swiss bank accounts to rebuild the levies to protect the people of New Orleans," on This Week. They were so mean.

The Obama campaign, without missing a step, emailed a response to Talking Points Memo's Sahil Kapur that basically amounts to, "if talking abouts it is so bad, why did he do it in the first place?"

If highlighting the fact that Mitt Romney had a Swiss bank account and put his money in offshore tax havens is “unseemly and disgusting,” perhaps he shouldn’t have done it in the first place. He can put this whole debate to bed by following decades of precedent and releasing additional years of tax returns to prove that he didn’t use these offshore accounts and corporations to avoid paying U.S. taxes. Until he does, Americans have to wonder just what he is hiding

And then the Obama campaign came back with a haymaker of a well-timed new campaign advertisement that highlights Romney's Swiss account:

Re: Mitt Romney, Offshore

The problem with Romney is that he thinks that he is going to sneak his way into the presidency.

I don't understand why the Republican party doesn't take somebody who started with nothing and owns a couple of businesses now into a politician. Small business owners vote Republican, but yet they can't get them into a political race.

More people would relate to this person, rather a person that gave subprime loans to businesses and watched them fail. They keep running these billionaires that were handed money and couldn't start a business to save their lives in these races.
