Comrade Bob and Grace may go, but little good will come if power is retained in the hands of Zanu-PF septuagenarians, writes our Africacorrespondent.

Reuters is reporting that Robert Mugabe has agreed to resign as Zimbabwe’s president, citing a source familiar with the negotiations.

The ruling ZANU-PF party had given the 93-year-old less than 24 hours to quit as head of state or face impeachment, an attempt to secure a peaceful end to his tenure after a de facto coup.

The source said the military was working on a resignation statement by Mugabe, without giving details.

State broadcaster ZBC said Mugabe would address the nation shortly.

Earlier on Sunday, pictured were published by the official Herald newspaper of Mugabe meeting top generals at his State House offices.

This was the only way out. The leaders of the outster had to understand
that if Mugabe remained in power, he would sort them out. Cde RG
Mugabe is vindictive, and would have exacted revenge on Gen Chiwenga.

As for those rejoicing, their cheering will die down very soon. Hardly
anything will change. This outster by the party was to ensure that the
order at the top of the party and nation remained unchanged.

The War Veterans have reasserted their influence, and Chiwenga as the
king maker will be hard to touch. Instead of the rolling 1 year extensions
Mugabe has been giving him as army chief, to circumvent constitutional
term limits, he will now get to stay there as long as he wants.

Mnangagwa will be president, but not with the same power as Mugabe.
He will last at most 5 years, and then there will be another power
struggle...

There is another victim of this saga, and that is South African
president Jacob Zuma. Until now, Zuma had been scheming
to install his ex-wife as president of South Africa, and like
next door in Zimbabwe, those shenanigans were splitting the
ruling party. Clearly there no appetite for such outrageous
politcal manuevers, and now the prospects for Nkosazana
Zuma Dlamini have shrunk to nearly zero...
