From what I understand, him and Ray Charles changed the game by taking ownership of their own stuff. Sadly, not too many black artists followed their lead, until much later.

Yeah, I believe that he was the first black artist to own his own show. It struggled though because all of the sponsors dropped off. I know his only surviving brother Freddy and hear some crazy stories.

Man I love this dude. You can barely hear it but he was one of the first Kats to bridge the crooner style
of singing to what became the new R&B style of singing. I would say that Sam Cooke was next with an all
R&B style, but he could croon also. An example being a the song "change is gonna come" (Sam Cooke)
