Report: Windows Phone 7 sales underwhelm

DSC_0125.jpg

Windows Phone 7 went on sale on Monday of this week in the U.S. and the sales were not as strong as Microsoft may have hoped.

According to reports by Thestreet, Microsoft sold 40,000 handsets in the first day sales in the U.S. through AT&T and T-Mobile. The numbers are based on a market research source who tracks phone sales. Microsoft estimated that they would sell 3.5 million devices in the Q4 of this year, but the numbers appear to be falling far shorter than expected.

The sales appear to be weak in the United States for Microsoft, almost as weak as the Microsoft Kin, which sold a mere 10,000 units. These sales figures do not include the 87,000 units allocated to every Microsoft Employee, or the 25,000 units that Dell will be trading their BlackBerry's for.

This may not be great first day news for Microsoft, but the true test lays ahead, as the holiday season in the U.S. quickly approaches, including Black Friday and Christmas. Windows Phone 7 has over 12,000 developers and 1,000 applications in their market place.

Google said last month that they sell 200,000 Android handsets a day, while Apple claims they sell 260,000 iPhone's a day.

To be expected. A lot of consumers have a bad taste from the previous versions of windows mobile & refuse to give them another chance.

^^This, and when Android and iOS were getting all the buzz, they were still tweaking shit in the lab.

until then i am more than happy with my htc tilt 2 running custom windows mobile 6.5.x rom.

I upgraded from the first Tilt to the iPhone4.

The Tilt2 was too bulky for me and Win Mobile even 6.5 is like a dinosaur :smh:

Like one of the posters said. Windows has left a bad taste in plenty of peoples mouths . I can't trust it and wont. Android keeps evolving and ios is legit. There is no need for a windows phone imo

That would be me. I had 2 versions of windows phones and with each new iteration the same problems would persist. Freezes and more freezes. For that, never again will I buy a Windows mobile anything.

too little too late, for windows. they screwed up too much in the past. How many apps do they have available for this platform? they need to have as many apps available at launch, as the iphone and android had. If not, they might as well hang it up.

Look at zune, supposed ipod/itouch competitor. 8 apps, been around for lik 2 years now. Thats crazy.

Kinect is more than making up for it.
kinect is bullshit. Microsoft set a 500 mill budget to promote kinectic for the hollidays, so dont fall for the marketing hype because u will be seeing the kinect every time u turn the tv on or go on a gaming website.

"Man...fuck all y'all mufuckas...haters! (pssst.... Angie, did my MSFT stock sales go through yet? Is it too late to add another shitload of shares?)

No multitasking, no SD card support of ANY kind, and they still don't know if they ever will support SD cards "say what", they deemed "cut and paste", as something "not needed", memory managment issues, no way from a WM user to upgrade, so all your old shit is not going to be compatible, a ugly UI, at least to me, poor MS office integration, way behind Android and iOS, ya, I expect them to lose, again...

I had win mobile since 2005 ,6600,6700, mogul, touch pro , touch pro 2 ,I've been on winmo for so long that i didn't want to switch ,I thought android was a joke ,little did I know winmo was a joke .something simple as an alarm clock was a crap shoot ,I would wake up and the phone will be froze lock up and unresponsive, people couldn't even call me to let me know i was late because of that, now if u cant get somethin as simple as that workin wtf else is worth the os, fuck that it took me a long time to stop makin excuses for winmo, I don't think I will bother myself with wp7.

Businesses do not count. Microsoft has even recommended that those that still use them to stick with 6.5 for now. The vast majority of real consumers didn't even know Microsoft was in the smartphone business. I've heard countless times "Why did they call it 7? Was it to capitalize on Windows 7?" Remember up until the iPhone smartphones was mostly for business people.

I played around a lil with some Win7 Mobile phones today. I was very impressive with the UI's quick response. It looks like the system is a lot better than the past WinMo versions.

BUT no copy and paste and no multi-task... I'm good with Android.

And there you have it. I went through 3 WM phones & encountered the same issues with each revision. The hardware was great but the OS was ridiculously frustrating over time. Plus they really fell behind the ball still having the user use a stylus for selections when more finger friendly phones were available on the market. I'll never go back to WM. I'm good with Android.
