"I went in search of my roots and had my DNA tested, and I am a Zulu,"

She also told South Africans she felt "at home" in the country.

"I'm crazy about the South African accent," she said. "I wish I had been born here."

:hmm:

And YET . . . . in the PBS Special OPRAH'S ROOTS . . . (2007)

http://www.pbs.org/previews/oprahs-roots/

The program presents the dramatic results of Winfrey's genetic analysis, which locate her matrilineal ancestors among the Kpelle people of Liberia on the western coast of Africa.

From, "I'm crazy about the South African accent," DUTCH :hmm: . . . . " I wish I had been born here. "

To what she says here . . .

 Now it's all about the strength!!?

:lol::lol: An some of ya'll are proud of this one here.

I keep telling ya'll, she does S. Africa for WASP's. White Anglo-Saxon Protestant.

Supporting South Africa is safe. Love your backyard, the hood, and her advertisers pull.

Now come on Oprah Church, come march for ya'll Mammi. Tell us how us slow field hands don't know enough to respect the woman!! An we should step and fetch because of her success!!

Well she doesn't even want to be a simple African American KAFFA!!

:hmm:

And I had to respond.

I guess she can't be a sellout, if she's not one of us.

WTF is one of us?

We all can trace our lineage to Africa and we all should be interested enough to find out where.

Haitians direct lineage is from Ghana and that is a beautiful thing.

Maybe if more people were like Barack Obama who appreciates his roots, there would be less division and "hating".

Us, as in the descendant of slaves.

Since South Africa was NOT a part of the Trans-Atlantic Slave trade, to say she is a Zulu, means she is NOT a descendant of slavery, like the rest of us, most likely are.

I think we could use a little less of the, " hating excuse ".

Don't like what I say, " Your a hater. "

Don't agree with someone, why, it's because your, " Hating. "

Ask some people, I'm one of the biggest haters they know. I like being called it. Reminds me of how powerful my opinions effect people that the best they can come up with, is, Your a hater!

Let the word mean, it's TRUE meaning.

If I hate you, you will know by the sheer vehement reality of the visible fact that my entire presence of existence is AGAINST you.

Just like the phrase . . . GOD DAYUM . . . give a word or phrase it's proper meaning.

If I say that, to DAMN someone by GOD, some serious shit is about to happen. I mean what I say, if I say that, I want the most high being to utterly DAMN you.

An I am angry enough, willing, and prepared to TRY and damage you physically to compare to what I wish GOD would do to you right now.

Now black people just use it to express surprise, or interest.

Words are the vibrations that create and effect life, so profoundly, not only the obvious emotional, communicative impact of our words. But even the scientific proof of understanding the vibrations of Mantric divine syllables, and the energies connected to sound.

I can not stress enough, how much I hate the trivialization of words and phrases in our community.

But I understand that certain persons, the top smart guys, want our community filled with that energy. That's why it is so prevalent in rap.

" Everyone hates me, I'm an outkast, if I don't get my way, it's because you hate me. Hate. Hate. Hate. "

On the mind, 24hr 7 for some. Then we permeate our lives, walking around Damning people, things, and places, by God.

An the evil men who know. They just smile at us. Because we'll defend it with fervid passion. Not ever understand how much it is hurting us.

P.S. Don't hate on my rant.

Actually none of us are African American. If you traced our roots individually we would have come from some parts of Africa. African American are your slave roots

Not to be all telling you about your own heritage but...

...the strong presence of Yoruba and Congolese cultural retentions in Haiti suggests some pretty strong connections to Benin / Nigeria and the West Central areas of Africa too (Congo, Rwanda, Angola etc.)

Rada and Petro Vodou rituals are waaay too deeply enmeshed in Haitian culture not to acknowledge these areas alongside Ghana. And yeah, whatever to Oprah's selectiveness.

That's mad corny.

Oprah Winfrey has done more black americans and Africans in general than anyone Ive ever seen in my life, from the scholarships to buying black people houses in Louisiana during Katrina (over 100 families) building schools and sending medicine to Africa...man anybody that hates on Oprah needs to be shot!

My uncle traced our roots and my great great great grandfather came to America by way of the Bahamas. When he came to America he was a free man. We actually still have a lot of family in the Bahamas. My mother's family is mostly from Canada and when we went to her family reunion there were pleny of white folks there. The thing to remember is that every human being can trace their ancestry to Africa. It really doesn't matter what route you took to get here, Africa is your true home.

Words are the vibrations that create and effect life, so profoundly, not only the obvious emotional, communicative impact of our words. But even the scientific proof of understanding the vibrations of Mantric divine syllables, and the energies connected to sound.

:) Lovely.

Good post Jam Jam. I too have my roots in the Bahamas in that same generation.

The thing about the DNA tracing is...

2 parents = 4 grandparents = 8 great grandparents = 16 great great grandparents = 32 great-great-greats, = etc etc etc

so by the time Oprah traced herself back to the Zulus, that's what-- like 128, 256 different ancestors we're talking here?

So you pick one out of 256 and that's what you claim now? Seems silly to me.

By the time any of us trace our roots back to Africa, you're talking any one of literally 100 different people at least. They could be from Senegambia, from Guinee, from Benin, from Liberia, from Cote D'Ivoire, from the Nigerian Yorubas or Ibos or Hausas, from the Akan of Ghana, from the Congolese, from the Tutsis or Hutus of Rwanda, from ANYWHERE.

So why pick the ancestors you like and snub the others? That's a bad look.

If I were ever to have my genealogies broken down like a pie chart, maybe I'd give more props to the 30% of this over the 10% of that but until then...I honor all my ancestors, known and unknown, good and even bad.

People tend to have a linear view of genetic ancestry- more body of water with many tributaries than one great lake.

I feel you, Dale. I think people are so quick to jump on her because she is so opinionated and such an entertainment icon. Remember, she is a person; people make mistakes. She does not represent the entirety of the race, BUT she does a lot more for this race than several other African Americans. Who cares who she claims or doesn't claim. She is following her calling and doing her. We could all stand to learn a thing or two from how she lives her life instead of huffing and puffing about these "comments."

Most Haitians believe they are descendants of Africans from Benin(Dahomey) but it is clear that what is now known as Benin, Togo and Ghana may have not been recognized as separate countries at the time of the slave trade.

You can visit old slave holding cells in Ghana that document hundreds of thousands of slaveships that left for what we now know as the West Indies, but most ended up in Haiti.

No doubt, I totally feel you on that.

I'm basing my reference mostly on the cultures of the civilizations now found in those lands. We can establish that the Akan (now in modern Ghana), the Dahomey (now in modern Benin), the Yoruba (modern Nigeria) and the Kongo people (modern Angola and the DRC) were all distinct cultures.

There is a place of honor in Haitian culture for all four of these, and more. To me that speaks to the unsinkable Haitian will in maintaining their roots, no matter what Europe and the US did to undermine this desire.

It's a lot harder to find distinct traces of these different cultures in the US than it is in Haiti, an island that is a fraction of the size of the Deep South where most US black folks descend from and live to this day.

The Haitian people will always get great credit in my book for struggling to maintain that.

Mark 12:41-43 (New International Version)

41 Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts. 42 But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a fraction of a penny.
43 Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, "I tell you the truth, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others."

Oprah gives because she got and GETS.

Look up Harpo under the D&B's profile. It's an ENTERTAINMENT company.

Everything she does, business wise, is to promote the advertising of goods, services, organizations, thoughts, etc. via various mediums she owns.

Advertise to YOU.

Why shouldn't she give back a bit of your money. She exists because she has the ability to get YOU the consumer to pay attention at least 3 times, and then purchase the goods, services, thoughts or organizations the mediums SHE controls, sell.

But because she built a school or 100, she is above criticisms.

On the other hand, I've bet you've never walked into a inner city school and catered those educators lunch as a thank you. BUT SINCE OPRAH'S DONE MORE!!!

No wonder so many of us were sold, and betrayed, hand you cats two bits, you ask no questions, and start talking about shooting your brother.

" Massa been good to us Chil'uns!!! All da good vittles and these beautiful clothes! Every day like kismis! Why's yous got to go askin questions, and doing ALL that HARD figuring and mess!?? Why you ain't juss leave with Harriet the night befoe! "

When did Oprah's clit become a slip and slide?

I agree, I may not like some of her views. I think she kisses the ass of to many crackers with her show. I hate her absolute hate for hip hop, lumping all artist into one catagory. However, she has done a hell of a lot for black folks, of course its never enough in our eyes. We just want rich black people to ride up and down the hood throwing money out the window (she may have enough to do it), very unrealalistic.

Shane you convinced me to actually pay a lot more attention to the words i use

As far as Oprah goes. You reach a certain point in celebrity when your words are worth more than your wallet. Oprah commenting on the atrocities that "No Child Left Behind" have done to impoverished schools will always do FAAAAAR more than her building thousands of schools and any other monetary "donations", which I believe as a wealthy person any funds that you donate are not a sacrifice at all.

When did Oprah's clit become a slip and slide?

Like LadyScorp said, you must be on some telepathic shit tonight Shane!

I just have to say this to add my "2 cents" in...all that shit she gives is called a TAX WRITE OFF! You make that kinda bank and don't want to get hit by the IRS hard and you'll start thinkin' of creative and MARKETABLE ways of "giving back" to "your people". Believe me when I say this, her connections trickle down to a lot more white people than they do the black ones...Believe that :yes::yes:

Oh, and for cats such as her, Jay-Z and the like let me give you more scripture to back that up...

Matthew 6
"Take care not to perform righteous deeds in order that people may see them; otherwise, you will have no recompense from your heavenly Father. When you give alms, do not blow a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets to win the praise of others."

Interesting you should mention the Yoruba, do they not practice the Ako-ojo, similar in origins to the Hebraic Sabbath.

It is specifically essential to the spiritual world that we as people of color of the world, think that the whites invented the Truth, and it is not your truth.

The best way to conceal the truth, is to make you believe it has nothing to do with you. An cause you to reject it.

But I ain't really a Hebrewist.

An if it is my bible verse which you speak of, I was simply using it as an example of the common sense that, Oprah gives because she got, and from where she gets it.

Others give because they truly wish to give.

You strip Oprah's earnings away, clothes, and title. She wouldn't spit on you if you were burning.

I agree with the original premise of this thread, as I have in the past agreed with Shane's assessment of Oprah and what she represents. I do appreciate the backing that she gave from the beginning to Barack Obama and his campaign. While I'm pretty sure her involvement was to a great extent self-serving, it didn't hurt his situation. But this is aside from the primary issues of this thread.

The look on her face on the PBS special when she was told her people were NOT from South Africa, was priceless.

This Oprah rant is such a non issue. I would be on board if she picked some European or Asian country of origin. No, she imagined a black african country as her ancestrial homeland. No big deal. Would be no different to me if she picked Angola, Kenya, Ghana, Sudan. This is ONE TIME when yall are stressing Oprah for some nonsense. For the record, O has a black boyfriend, a black girlfriend - literally speaking, and built a school in a black country and imagined herself a daughter of africa. Chill folks. Plus she is backing Obama.

Still. Oprah is a man hating, especialy black man hating, white woman pimpstress.

Hey man, Black Ethiopia was Christian long before Massa was.

Like most great cultures, it all comes back home. ;)
