Joe Valente of Commack received an unwelcome birthday treat when his family cut into the cake bought for his 96th birthday and found a rodent tail.

It’s safe to say whatever 96-year-old Joe Valente of Commack wished for when he blew out the candles on his German apple ring birthday cake, a slice of rat’s tail wasn’t it.

But that’s what happened Thursday night when the man’s family cut into the cake bought at a King Kullen Supermarket in Commack, WABC News reported.

A gray stringy rodent tail and what appeared to be grayish mold were embedded in the yellow cake, family members said, revolting the partygoers gathered for the celebration of the nonagenarian’s birthday.

Valente took a bite of the cake and complained to his family about the taste.

"He said it doesn't taste right," his nephew, Neil Gold, told WABC.

The supermarket’s website boasts the German apple ring cake is “a customer favorite.”

A spokesman for the supermarket chain said the company would cooperate with any external investigations and conduct its own internal probe of the incident.

“We took immediate steps as a precautionary measure,” the company said in a statement. “Product has been removed from the bakery and the premises have undergone a thorough inspection. There are no known safety or rodent issues in this bakery department and it is in good standing with all Department of Agriculture inspections.”
