Belize elects first black leader, ousts incumbent
Fri Feb 8, 2008 12:11pm EST

"It's a great feeling. I'm extremely grateful and humbled," Barrow said, as his supporters drove through Belize City, hanging out of cars, honking their horns, waving UDP flags and thumping on car roofs.

In a diverse country of indigenous Maya, Mestizos and African-descended Creoles and Garifuna, many on the street were rejoicing at a Creole winning power. Belize's past leaders were born in Belize but of European descent.

FISCAL PRUDENCE

Investors in Belize's roughly $1 billion in public debt expected Barrow to maintain fiscal stability after a late-2006 debt restructuring stabilized the country's debt ratings.

"I'm fairly confident that he understands the importance of fiscal responsibility and transparency, and that's the key issue," said Bear Stearns analyst Carl Ross in New York.

"The other issue is getting the economy going, which means getting investment going in the tourism sector."

Barrow says he plans to get more Belizeans investing in the tourism industry which, despite the country's lush jungles and sparkling coral reefs, lags neighbors Costa Rica and Mexico.

Tall and easy-going with a shaven head and a rapper son, Barrow appealed to young Belizeans voting for the first time.

Musa, 63, did not comment on the election result.

Many older Belizeans are strongly attached to Musa's party for its role in ending British rule and because local party officials help poor families with school fees and free household appliances. But anger over tax hikes and alleged graft scandals erupted in anti-government riots in 2005. (Editing by John O'Callaghan)

Either way damn, you can't work it out to get your son extradicted for some tropical parole or something mu'fucka? Ain't it YOUR country? Help your boy out, least you could do seein how you aint raise the lil nigga. :hmm:

Shyne grew up in the states. I remember him saying he never even seen his father.
Both his parents were from Belize so i'm not too sure wht he is mixed with.
But this would be a good chance for his pops to do something positive for his son.

Shyne (real name Jamaal Barrow) is a rapper born on November 18, 1978 in Belize City, Belize to a Belizean Creole politician and a Garifuna mother. As a child, he was spurned by his father due to his illegitimacy and mixed ethnicity. Shyne is said to be a practicing Jew. Born in Belize, Barrow relocated with his mother to Brooklyn, in New York's Flatbush district at about age 13.

Garifuna
by Jean-Philippe Soule

All the black communities living on the Caribbean coast of Central America are commonly called Garifuna or Black Carib, or as they refer to themselves, Garinagu. Over the last three centuries, in spite of many migrations, re-settlements and interactions with Indians, British, French and Spanish, they have preserved much of the culture from their two main branches of ancestry. The Garinagu are the descendants of Caribs Indians and Black African slaves. The Caribs were originally indigenous peoples from South America. They spoke the Arawak Indian language and are believed to have left the Orinoco jungles of Venezuela to settle in the Caribbean. They inhabited various Caribbean islands but were later pushed out by European colonists and were able to keep only two islands, Dominica and Saint Vincent.

In 1635 two Spanish ships carrying slaves to the West Indies were ship-wrecked near St. Vincent. The slaves escaped and were welcomed and protected by the Carib Indians. Their intermarriage formed the Garinagu people (known as Garifuna today). The Garinagu still spoke Arawak. They remained on those two islands where they traded with the French. In 1795, the British took control of their islands to start sugar cane plantations. In 1797, British relocated all the Garinagu prisoners along with some black slaves to the island of Roatan in Honduras. From Roatan they moved to the Spanish fort of Trujillo and settled all along the coast from Belize through Honduras to Nicaragua.

At last census in 1974 the Garifuna population was believed to be approximately 77,000, in 51 communities, most of them on the Caribbean shores of Honduras. Their language, agriculture (yucca), and religion remain similar to those found among their ancestral peoples of the Amazon, while their dances, drum music and artistic heritage shows a strong African influence.

Word from Belize is that the parents were only together for a short time. When Jamal was between 10 and 12, the mother took him to that great Caribbean mecca, New York.

For my North American friends, both parents would be classed as "black" in the USA, but in Belize, they're different kinds of "black". The mother is Garifuna, which were people from Dominica's mountains who had escaped English settlers. They were a blend of African slaves and Native Americans (Carib Indians).

The Caribs accepted Africans into their nation and went to the high mountains of Dominica which is in the Windward Islands, a good 1,000 miles from Belize. After many many years, they were defeated and the majority were shipped across the Caribbean Sea to British Hondouras (250 years ago). British Hondouras is what Belize was called until 1981.

Other blacks are descendents of slaves and indentured servants from other parts of the West Indies (which includes Trinidad and Tobago, Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos - none of which are actually in the Caribbean Sea). Others are descendants from migrant workers.

The Garifuna try to keep their traditions seperate, but have also accepted the political and ideological reforms of the Black Power movement of the 1950s, 60s and 70s. In fact, people see Mr. Barrow's victory as an extension of Black Power (which AP and Reuters appear to hint at).

As for Shyne, the question now becomes did he get his US citizenship? Will he be fighting from an INS cell like Slick Rick? Will he be a Deportee?

Yours sincerely,

Proof that the entire world looks down on African-Americans and descendants of African slaves. It has never been just White Americans, the entire world has had an negative perception of African Americans, even Africans. Much like the negative preception African-Americans have of other African-Americans, for example hatred of southern African Americans, Educated African Americans, Wealthy African Americans, or any African American that does not fit the norm or what each and every nigga thinks he or she should be. He was ashamed and a coward. No love or respect for the dude.

my mom is from Belize (and i still have MANY relatives there...as a matter of fact i spent X-mas there)...and whatever Barrow's faults are he's better than Musa (who is actually Palestinian)...Musa and his administration were bleeding Belize dry...they have got the be some of the most corrupt politicians i have ever witnessed (one of Musa's ministers is actually married to my aunt...and trust me...they're livin extremely fat)...
