Nader announces new bid for White House

By HOPE YEN, Associated Press Writer 45 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - Ralph Nader said Sunday he will run for president as a third-party candidate, criticizing the top White House contenders as too close to big business and pledging to repeat a bid that will "shift the power from the few to the many."

Nader, 73, said most people are disenchanted with the Democratic and Republican parties due to a prolonged Iraq war and a shaky economy. The consumer advocate also blamed tax and other corporate-friendly policies under the Bush administration that he said have left many lower- and middle-class people in debt.

"You take that framework of people feeling locked out, shut out, marginalized and disrespected," he said. "You go from Iraq, to Palestine to Israel, from Enron to Wall Street, from Katrina to the bumbling of the Bush administration, to the complicity of the Democrats in not stopping him on the war, stopping him on the tax cuts."

"In that context, I have decided to run for president," Nader told NBC's "Meet the Press."

Nader also criticized Republican candidate John McCain and Democrats Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton for failing to support full Medicare for all or cracking down on Pentagon waste and a "bloated military budget. He blamed that on corporate lobbyists and special interests, which he said dominate Washington, D.C., and pledged in his third-party campaign to accept donations only from individuals.

"The issue is do they have the moral courage, do they have the fortitude to stand up to corporate powers and get things done for the American people," Nader said. "We have to shift the power from the few to the many."

Nader also ran as a third-party candidate in 2000 and 2004, and many Democrats still accuse him of costing Al Gore the 2000 election.
Obama, responding Saturday to Nader's earlier criticisms that he lacked "substance," praised Nader as a "heroic figure."

"In many ways he is a heroic figure and I don't mean to diminish him. But I do think there is a sense now that if somebody is not hewing to the Ralph Nader agenda, then you must be lacking in some way," Obama said.
Clinton called Nader's announcement a "passing fancy" and said she hoped his candidacy wouldn't hurt the Democratic nominee.

"Obviously, it's not helpful to whomever our Democratic nominee is. But it's a free country," she told reporters as she flew to Rhode Island for campaign events.

Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee, speaking shortly before Nader's announcement, said Nader's past runs have shown that he usually pulls votes from the Democrat. "So naturally, Republicans would welcome his entry into the race," the former Arkansas governor said on CNN.

Nader vociferously disputes the spoiler claim, saying only Democrats are to blame for losing the race to George W. Bush. He said Sunday there could be no chance of him tipping the election to Republicans because the electorate will not vote for a "pro-war John McCain."

"If the Democrats can't landslide the Republicans this year, they ought to just wrap up, close down, emerge in a different form," Nader said.

Here we go again... :hmm:

If the democrats run a good campaign, then Nader won't matter. If they are on the correct side of the issues then they have nothing to worry about.

What's wrong with Ralph Nader? I always thought that he would make a great president, IMO. I think, eventually, we'll have to have an independent party at some point considering that the democrats have proven to be as incompetent as the Republicans have (ie the democratic senate).

One day, the I's will truly have it, damnit.

I wouldn't say incompetent as much as ineffective. And that's because they can never muster enough votes to override a veto by that idiot that sits in the white house. They ARE the majority but, only by like two seats.

nader is probably getting paid by the republicans, what is the point of him running for office? he will definately take a chunk of the independent vote from the democrats

With all the talk about the costs of running a campaign where is Nader getting money from? He'll gain the attention of enough independent kooks who will vote for him as a contrarian act on their part that in certain states it may make a difference. Remember Florida in 2000? Nader is from CT. where I'm at, and I'm calling talk radio stations to start a dialogue against him. The most powerful talk station in CT, is www.wtic.com Rush in on from 12 noon - 3 pm and a Democratic leaning host is on from 3 - 6 PM (est), Colin McEnroe. I listen to Rush for the comedy as long as I can take it then cColin's show for comedy and info. Colin McEnroe tore into Joe Lieberman so bad he won't even be on his show anymore!!

Nader will not be a factor. He only received 0.03% of the vote in 2004. This time he won't even come close to that pitifully low figure. The die has been cast. The next President of the United States will be Barack Obama. Bet it!!!

It's always funny to me how people try to jump on Nader's nuts like he's actually about something. You don't hear about him untill a campaign rolls around every four years other that that he's MIA

Now ain't that the truth.

I'm watching Nader on CSPAN RIGHT NOW (Fri 2/29/08 - 8 AM EST). If you listen to him it's just a man exercising his 1st amendment right to run for President on the ideals that would make this a beautiful life in America. He is running for office by going to all 50 states and promoting a 12 part plan that will be added to the most important local concerns in each stste. It's not focused on caucuses or primaries, and it's not a race to raise the most money. That actually is the way it should be, thus his campaign being based in ideals. he chose a running mate also; Matt Gonzalez from San Francisco. (reaching for that Hispanic vote?)

I'll look at his web site to be more informed, ( www.votenader.org ) but[/url] to think he can rock the established system is far from reality. It truly needs to bo done, but from within the system, as the Obama Presicency represents.

Take the time to tune into CSPAN sometime today (they repeat the morning programming) to hear this fool. (yeah I think he's nuts but I'm gonna listen and be more informed in my discussions against him).
