R&B Bands: Back in the 1980s & 1990s

one fucking star
No problem, but the sad part is that today most people will struggle to name 3 R&B Bands that play their own instruments (they did in the 1980s and 1990s).

Nevertheless, it seems like every "Rock" band plays their own instruments. I can't understand why that has happened?

The late 80s and 90s played synths. Instruments? Yeah, I suppose technically they are but I'm trained in acoustic so to me they are not.
All these you post are at least 50% synths.

My understanding is this is the impact of the removal of music from public school education curriculum. We used to have a lot of outstanding musicianship in cities all over the country. public education was seem as a vehicle for the aspiration of black people. To disenfranchise black people public education was undermined in many ways. Music programs were deemed as unnecessary under purposely restricted budgets.

Outstanding thread.

Thanks, I like your answer and explanation also. I played clarinet from 6 years and was taught how to read music (in addition, I played in a percussion band in elementary school). Furthermore, I always took pleasure in going through my parents and older brothers' albums and 45 singles (believe it or not I have actually seen a few 16s and 78s),in addition, to listening to the music I enjoyed reading the liner notes, so music has always been vital to my upbringing.

I always felt that knowing how to play an instrument spawned so much creativity when it came to music and I remember this from playing in bands at school. This brings back memories of when we had a concerts and one of the pieces we had to learn was "Beethoven's 5th Symphony."(The original classical piece not the instrumental by Walter Murphy). That was cool, but I always wanted the band to join the orchestra and play "Fly Robin Fly" by the Silver Convention and "Love is the Message" by MFSB.

You're a hater

I'm not a hater. I love good music. You cats have been ear-fucked to the point where you can't even tell the difference between real instruments and machines. You can't even hear the music because you're so used to listening to music that's been compressed like hell down to 128kbps and has no depth or breadth.
