If you were new to comic books, what series would you start reading in? I was looking for something in the marvel universe.

I would advise you not to get into Marvel Comics...and if you were I would have you stick to the kid friendly titles they have marked with a red banner at the top of the books that say 'Marvel Adventures.'

Here's why - Most of the mainstream books will be good for a run or two but you need to know which writers and/or artists to follow. The main books will never go deep on the main characters and if they do those characters will get a RESET...which comes in the form of a retcon.

Marvel writes in a James Bond-ish way these days...which means you know James is going to win...they just string you a long with big explosions and tits and ass. If that is what you want. Marvel and DC got you.

If you want story where things are up in the air and the main character is always in true peril...hit some indie books from Image, Dark Horse, Boom Entertainment or others.

The books highlight above:

Thor will always win...

Wolverine can't die...has a gay son and a clone daughter-ish character and is always in 7 to 9 books a month.

Punisher just returned from being a Frankenstien monster and is set to be a cyborg for the next storyline.

Mostly I agree with Megazell but if you want to read a good marvel series I suggest

The Ultimates 1 & 2 by Mark Millar and Bryan Hitch then stop, do not read anymore of the ultimates cause it gets shitty.

Then head over and pick up their run on Fantastic 4

Thanks for yall input. I was noticing that comics now days like marvel have same characters in some many different comics, that it would be hard to keep up with the progress of a character. Yea indie comics are becoming like fan base movies that have great story and passion in the character than big studio comics. Thanks again.

These days the only time Marvel is good is when they are writing books that are non-canon. I just bought Spider-Man Fairy Tales for .50 cents and it's a great read because of the different takes on Spider-man but it will never affect the main universe.

So if you get an itch to check in on Spidey or X-Men make sure it's a non-canon book like What If? or Noir or something like that becuase then you will MAYBE see writer cutting loose and doing solid stories.
