Queen of Soul (What Do Y'all Think?)

Beyonce mentioned names of women that were influences in R&B/Soul, including the great Aretha Franklin. Then she called Tina Turner the "Queen of Soul" which absolutely offended Aretha. In fact, Aretha later sarcastically said "love to Beyonce anyway."

Here's the brief article.

Franklin Slams Beyonce Grammy Intro

LOS ANGELES (AP) - When Aretha Franklin is unhappy, she does not mince words. On Tuesday, the longtime Queen of Soul slammed Beyonce Knowles' intro to Tina Turner at Sunday's Grammy Awards, in which Knowles called Turner, not Franklin, "the queen."

"I am not sure of whose toes I may have stepped on or whose ego I may have bruised between the Grammy writers and Beyonce," Franklin said in a statement issued by her publicist. "However, I dismissed it as a cheap shot for controversy."

E-mails to Knowles' publicist Yvette Noel-Schure and calls and e-mails to Recording Academy spokeswomen Jaime Sarachit and Barb Deghan were not immediately returned.

In the first few seconds of Knowles' intro to Turner's performance, she name-dropped Franklin and a long list of famed female singers. Then the "Crazy in Love" chanteuse focused on Turner.

"There is one legend who has the essence of all of those things: the glamour, the soul, the passion, the strength, the talent," said Knowles, strutting in hot pants. "Ladies and gentlemen. Stand on your feet and give it up for the queen."

At a party later that night, Knowles called Turner her "ultimate icon."

Still, Franklin ended her brief criticism on a gracious note, thanking the Grammys and the voting academy and saying, "love to Beyonce anyway."

Known for such hits as "Respect" and "Chain of Fools," Franklin tied with the Clark Sisters for best gospel performance trophy for her duet "Never Gonna Break My Faith" with Mary J. Blige.

damn, black folk. . . . we petty over the littlest shit!

Resurgence of the Soul Sample

“When Beyonce mentioned “the queen” I was expecting Aretha, and was taken somewhat aback to hear Tina’s name instead. They’re both great, but “queen of soul” was Aretha’s nickname all these years, like James Brown’s was “the godfather of soul.” Imagine someone else being given that title? Doesn’t seem right to me.”

Aretha has every right to be offended, it was a deliberate diss by Beyonce. Beyonce could have easily introduced her as her “Idol and inspiration.” I think Beyonce feels she’s Tina’s younger version, and that’s fine, but Tina is not the “Queen!”

By the way, this is not my opinion but I saw it was an interesting comment to the article. I really could care less about the bickering. It's petty.

Beyonce didn't likely write that intro herself, and she never called Tina "The Queen of Soul," just "The Queen" (which she is, in many ways, including "... of Rock/R&B").

As I commented on the main board, IMO Aretha is without the question the "Queen of Soul." Tina Turner can also take the title of "Queen" too but not of Soul." Tina sang the hell out of rock music. Tina was never a R&B or soul singer. In fact Tina had a predominately white following.

There shouldn't been a problem with Beyonce's comment about Tina. Since its a different music genre, Aretha has no arguement. Just tell Aretha to stay focused on her diet and when she's works herself down to Tina's size we will then listen to her arguement.

Who the fuck cares, have you bought any of her albums to help her lose some of that fuckin' weight. It's business, Never personal. Tina happens to look more fit than Aretha, plain and fuckin' simple. if the Grammys were being given through the radio, then fine, but it was televised, and Aretha should've lost some fuckin' weight instead of looking like Big Pun before he has his heart attack.
Hate to say it, but that's the music business for ya. the only loyal people are your fans, not your fellow musicians.

Good points. Thanks for really clarifying that, Mo-Better. I peeped your thread on the main board after I created this thread.
