Quantity over quality?

I'm talking about black actors/actresses. Watching a film called 'The Rich Man's Wife' with Halle Berry in it. Got me thinking about her and Gabrielle Union and people like them, compared to Angela Bassett & Loretta Devine and others like them. Some of these faces you see all the time in questionable roles, others tend to choose higher quality roles but you rarely see them...which is better?

LOL! I think she is beautiful, but a less than average actress in every role I've seen her in...same with Gabrielle Union. and neither has had any really challenging roles in my opinion.

Gabby has never. She's verrrry beautiful. Halle looks avg white girl with a tan to me. And has the emotional range of tuna. Deer in headlights look. In every single role. Ever. She had 1 decent role that...Things we lost in the fire movie. And even THEN she wasn't all that good in it.

And it amazes me how....no one ever notices this. I'm like i can't be the only 1 who notices this chick cannot act. I can't be.

You always prefer quality over quantity. Since so few movies with meaningful roles are made for black people I have to say black actors and actresses must go for quantity. Hollywood isn't making movies to cast blacks in prominent rolls. Only a few blacks get shots at top rated roles.

An action movie maybe we can get a play. But if a black person is cast in a feature film you can bank on a white person being there to lend guidance or to bail their asses out.

We also need our own Academy Awards.

My friend and i were JUST talking about this a little while ago about the whole wonder woman fiasco going on as i'm a big WW fan. And we got to talking about all these wack ass white actresses in action movies and how disgusting they look. All skinny and unatheletic. Lets get some decently built black women in these roles.

Jennifer Lewis...St. Louis native who has been playing the loudmouth, obnoxious woman for 20 years in lots of films & plays

Ever saw Undercovers?

I wish there were more black people in 'Hollywoodland' but I think we need more Tyler Perry's that want to make a plethora of things...like I need the Underworld creator to make a role for a black chick. That would be so kick ass.

I'm tired of thinking all a full figured black woman is good for is some drama. Or some vixen looking black woman is good for a redeeming harlot. Why Gabby gotta have all the I'm a tough bitch with a softy center roles? Chick you ain't a milk chocolate truffle.

No one is going to pay attention to shit like this cause the damn dramas sell. The minute they stop selling maybe people will get the picture.

Damn can we get another Eatonton, Florida?

Goodness I'm done.

Even though I's not a Tyler Perry I have to agree with you. `Aside from Perry and Spike Lee what happened to the other black directors like Bill Duke, Forest Whitaker and John Singleton?

We do need more Tyler Perry's and these entertainers, singers and athletes who are making millions should be looking to invest in this entertainment venue. Its a proven moneymaker they can invest in and we all would benefit.

Understand my support of Perry is based upon his hiring practices. He hires black actors and actresses giving them job/roles where if they depended upon Hollywood no roles would exist.

I think Halle has taken and excelled at high quality roles, just not many. Gabrielle is fine for an ensemble cast on a tv show (she was good enough on "Flash Forward")but not strong enough to be a major player in a movie.

A lot of little seen but quality work is better than some low quality, widely seen work. But sometimes one can lead to the other. Taraji Henson says she got the "Benjamin Buttons" role because someone saw her in some Tyler Perry movie.

Goodness I'm done.

I still like "Undercovers". It's probably a little too funny when it would play better as a more serious show but I think it's pretty entertaining. It would probably be a better fit on USA than NBC.

Hubby had a crush on her.

Me too. I thought she had a sexy older woman vibe on "Diff'rent World".
She has been working the same character for two decades but it's always entertaining. Jane Lynch has played different aspects of her "Sue Sylvester" character for the last ten and she won an Emmy this year.

It's not that proven, a lot of studios have come and gone but more actors should look to do more work behind the camera so they aren't begging and waiting for work.

That's how I feel on dude and his product. He'll never get any of my money but he does get Black actors working. Now if he would hire some good writers for his movies and tv shows, I might watch one of them.

When I say proven I mean its proven we will support good black cinema. Studios fail when they produce inferior products. The same as record companies or any business that doesn't handle day to day operations.

My point is we hear of so many who made it then squandered their money on poor investments, purchases or just living the life until their money runs out. I'm talking about running a business. Yes there's a risk but if your going to invest your money make it a gamble that could set you up for life.

Amazingly we agree on the large scale and the overall point but not on minor things. There's been plenty of good Black cinematic product that went unseen by the masses and even more garbage that made a ton of money.
I like the way Will and Jada Smith have built up an incredibly diverse portfolio with investments in music, movies, and attempts at owning resort hotels. Each thing has proven to be of both high quality and commercially successful ('cept Will's rapping. Dude's been garbage for a long time).

LOL @ Will's rapping. I haven't listened to an entire rap song since Public Enemy's, "Fight The Power." Not my thing.

You better than me I only made it through one. :(

Like you I really wanted to like it too, but for me it wasn't the acting so much as it was the plot and writing. Felt a little too contrived. And I couldn't get over how chick really aint Boris' wife and how the chemistry on screen between him and his wife is stilted...but Boris isn't stilted cause some of the best acting I seen him do was on Resident Evil...I dunno...

I'm trying to come up on a new hustle. Maybe I should produce some short films and send them to Tahoe.

My bad. Good short films.

Always choose quality. Look at Daniel Day Lewis. The guy does maybe 3 - 4 films a decade, and in the end, gets critical acclaim each time.

The same applies to Johnny Depp. He has also always pretty carefully chosen his roles.

Unfortunately, women in Hollywood do not have the luxury of time - they are on a much shorter clock then male actors. Male actors can be in demand well into their 60's if they're popular enough.

Female actresses are passed over and discarded for younger actresses by the time they hit 40. When they hit that age, casting agents passing them up and the role offers get fewer and fewer.

Quantity, frequency gets you paychecks and quality of work, gets you the big parts and stardom...
