Program Coding programs for African American kids

Years ago there was some talk on here about Coding programs for kids and I think it was Kaya, but I don't know his new name to reach out and I thought I still had his number but can't find it either, but is there a program anyone can recommend?

My grandson is 12 and is interested in Coding and other forms of IT. We went to a program over the weekend and it was cool, but all the instructors were Indian, and nothing against them because they were great. But I want him with people that may take more interest in him and not just take our $179 a month. I want some type of hands on programs with consistency.

He has an IQ of 130, so trying to find ways to keep him occupied is a must and we really want to tap into something that he can get a head start on now. He's in a career and college preparatory school and a stem program, but it's at their pace and we can tell he's trying to move quicker for some reason.

Any suggestions?

I agree with you on franchised code academies. We haven't found one that was really passionate about developing a child's skills (unlike Mathnasium, which was great for our kids).

Public school computer science teachers are a joke also.

Only suggestion I have is search for coding/programming meetups in your area. Take him there to meet coders who enjoy learning, problem solving and teaching. Network with them to find other local resources.

I know you want something hands on, but in the meantime, have him take a look at this

This is the full Harvard Computer Science introduction course. Any of the higher paying jobs are going to require he be able to show that he knows algorithms and data structures covered in this course. Full Harvard course without the tuition. He can follow it up with other Harvard courses for free as well.

Following up on what Big Tex posted, Edx.org is a great resource. They have CS courses from Harvard, Stanford, MIT, Cal and more. All Free.

You may also be able to get free access to Skillshare, LinkedIn learning and other things via your library card.

I'd also check out https://www.hiddengeniusproject.org when he gets to HS. Not sure where you're located but they're Oakland based but also have sites in LA, Detroit, Chicago, Atlanta, and Baltimore as of right now.

We need more of us in the industry.
