Princeton professor under fire after using n-word in lecture

An anthropology professor at Princeton University allegedly used the n-word multiple times during a lecture this week, prompting a walkout by several students and an expletive-laced in-class confrontation.

Several students told The Daily Princetonian that professor Lawrence Rosen used the word “n—-r” when asking a question Tuesday during his Anthropology 212 course, “Cultural Freedoms: Hate Speech, Blasphemy and Pornography.”

“What is worse, a white man punching a black man, or white man calling a black man a n—-r?” Rosen allegedly asked during a lecture on oppressive symbolism.

Student Devyn Holliday told the student newspaper that Rosen, who did not return a message seeking comment Friday, used the word while describing “what is acceptable as free speech and what is not.”

After asking that initial question, students said Rosen used the word “n—-r” two more times during in-class discussions.

Well how can someone tell? If it part of the point being made , then it doesn’t matter. He COULD be getting off on using the word, but in the context of the class you can’t have it both ways. Either it can be used in the discussion or it can’t.

He could have prepared the class in such a way that day for the use of the term. but no, he wanted to see the visceral reaction of the students.....and yes there were black students in that class who walked out. even if the class was about hate racism or whatever, ....its how you do some things that mater.

It's a fine line for white professors to do it, so I could understand some people feeling uncomfortable in how he was probably using it.

These professors know how to pick their battles. I alway survey the type of students before I hold certain type of conversations.

Maybe, but I really doubt it. Colleges usually give professors the freedom to teach as they see fit.

For the most part it's not that big of deal. I'm sure this is not the first time this professor has ever done something like that, it's just the first time it's probably got outside the classroom.
