I think he's overlooking some "musicians" who have blown up because of the internet. Justin Bieber, Soulja Boy, Chief Keef, and The Weeknd all got famous due to viral internet attention. I first heard about The Weeknd when someone posted HOB in the music section of this board, waaaaay before he was famous.

he's not talking about gaining notoriety on the net and parlaying that into a conventional career..he's talking about actually making money from selling music you created on the internet.. thats not nearly as lucrative as one would think.
