Orrin Hatch is retiring, some speculate Romney will run for his seat. if elected he could then be elected president pro tempore of the US senate.

lets say some hard shit results from the russian investigation and Pence and Ryan go down before a new speaker of the house is elected.

:hmm:

That's not how government works. Orrin Hatch is pro tempore because he's the longest serving Republican senator. If Orrin Hatch leaves office, Senate pro tempore becomes whoever is the longest serving senator of the majority party

US Constitution section 3 clause 5:

The Senate shall chuse [sic] their other Officers, and also a President pro tempore, in the Absence of the Vice President, or when he shall exercise the Office of the President of the United States.

Clause five provides for a President pro tempore of the Senate, a Senator elected to the post by the Senate, to preside over the body when the Vice President is either absent or exercising the Office of the President.

they started electing the most senior member only for the past 75 years or so, but they dont have to. its not automatic. hell he aint even got to be an elected senator...they can elect a non politician to the office.
