Free-agent center Ben Wallace agreed to terms with the Detroit Pistons on Friday, according to a league source.

The contract is for one year at the veteran's minimum of $1.3 million, according to sources.

Wallace is expected to sign the deal early next week.

Wallace became a free agent this summer after the Phoenix Suns bought him out of the last year of his contract. Wallace was traded from the Cleveland Cavaliers to Phoenix earlier this summer for Shaquille O'Neal.

The move is a bittersweet reunion of sorts. Wallace bolted from the Pistons for the Chicago Bulls in summer 2006 after the Pistons balked at matching the Bulls' four-year, $60 million offer.

Wallace's move from Detroit to Chicago was a bit of a bust. He never regained his defensive dominance and was traded away two years later to Cleveland.

In Detroit, the Pistons plan on using Wallace as a backup to Kwame Brown. The Pistons were especially thin on their front line last season and still believe that Wallace can defend and rebound -- albeit not at the same pace as his last stint with the Pistons.

Maybe more importantly to the Pistons, Wallace can provide veteran leadership. Only two other Pistons, Richard Hamilton and Tayshaun Prince, remain from the 2003-04 championship team.

With younger, offensive-oriented players such as Charlie Villanueva and Ben Gordon joining the team, the Pistons are trying to find ways to preserve their blue-collar approach to defense they've been known for under Joe Dumars, the former Piston who is the team's president of basketball operations.

Adding Wallace as a vocal proponent of the "Pistons Way" should help that effort in the locker room.

On Friday, Dumars announced that the team has signed 2009 draft selections Austin Daye, DaJuan Summers and Jonas Jerebko to contracts.

Daye was drafted by Detroit with the 15th overall pick in the first round of the draft. The 6-foot-11 sophomore forward from Gonzaga averaged 12.7 points and 6.8 rebounds in 34 games last season.

Summers was selected with the 35th overall pick in the second round. He started 98 of his 101 games at Georgetown and finished his collegiate career with averages of 11.2 points and 4.4 rebounds per game.

Jerebko was selected with the 39th overall pick in the second round of the draft. He played professionally in Italy the last two seasons.

probably a good gesture by dumars to let wallace retire a piston

I would bet good money Rodman could come back to the league right now and average more rebounds than Wallace.

May as well allow the Brother to retire from the place in which he had his greatest success.

dumars up to something :hmm:

I hope so....
Cause thus far I have seen nothing good come out of "The trade" and the expanded salary cap that was suppose to come out of it,

What I have seen is the destruction of a top tier team.....
as regards Ben nothing personal ....But as a Piston fan....I really don't give a Fuck....Chauncey,McDyess or Rasheed ain't comin back.....so what is the point??

Damn, nigga went from a 4-Year / $60 MM a year player ..
To three years later making the league minimum $1.3MM a year ....

Aint' that a bitter pill to swallow. :smh:

Hell no considering he never deserved that type money to begin with. This guy should be glad someone still wants to employ his ass at this stage. Ben Wallace was NEVER worth 15mill per. He's one of THE most overrated players of this generation. A great guy, with tremendous work ethic but completely overrated as a player.

He's one of those guys who just happened to be born in the right year. Had this cat played ball in the 80's he would have been just a hard working guy making a couple hundred thou a year.

Doesnt matter cause this is the NBA so he still get all the money he's owed for this season which is the last year of his contract plus that 1.3

Ben Wallace WINS

Even if Ben Wallace is no longer at the top of his game, he will put asses in seats at the Palace of Auburn Hills. People in and around Detroit love Ben Wallace to death.

Ben Wallace>>>Dennis Rodman

Cracka, please.
He was a better shot blocker, and that's about it. Rodman could out rebound Ben Wallace and out defend him. In his prime, Rodman could stay out all night, drinking and snorting blow off white girls' flat asses, then ride his motorcycle to the arena 5 minutes before tip-off and shut down Karl Malone.

yea there is still nostalgia for Ben here.....
But whether he brings people into The Palace remains to be seen.....The trade and the destruction of The Pistons has left a bitter taste in a lot of fans mouth....

We want a contender ......not a ghost of glory days gone by.... and Ben Gordon and Villanueva and another no name coach ain't looking to promising in a lot of peoples eyes....especially when you look at the players who are gone and why...I mean look at this shit...Kwame Brown is a starter.....now the brother did up his game from his La days....But I'm sayin....and fuckin Ben Gordon when Chauncey wanted to retire a Piston....WTF??

Thoth... man... I can't wrap my mind around the shit Joe Dumar is doing man... Moving Chauncey and all this other shit..at least it seemed like he at least had some logic behind it (even if it wasn't the best move) but when we picked up Ben Gordon..I was like WTF... I've never liked undersized 2 guards that chuck the rock and don't play defense..

Ben Wallace means a lot to the franchise.. but damn..he's on his last fumes...

Dumars better have something up his sleeve

Ben Gordon has flawed game but goddammit in the playoffs you ned someody who can create their own shot. Theres not a LOT of guys who can put points on the board in the crunch better than BG. A 3-guard platoon like they have is okay.

Remember Dumars specialty is taking a bunch of outcasts and misfits and turning them into a cohesive unit.
