Former Washington Redskins and Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Antwaan Randle El is perhaps best remembered for his 43-yard touchdown pass in Super Bowl XL that aided a Pittsburgh win over Seattle, but a decade later, the physical and mental drawbacks have been so significant that he regrets ever playing in the NFL.

“If I could go back, I wouldn’t” play football, he told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette in a Steelers-themed project posted Tuesday. “I would play baseball. I got drafted by the Cubs in the 14th round, but I didn’t play baseball because of my parents. They made me go to school. Don’t get me wrong, I love the game of football. But right now, I could still be playing baseball.”

Randle El, who played in Washington from 2006 to 2009 between two stints in Pittsburgh, said he regularly experiences trouble walking down stairs — “I have to come down sideways sometimes, depending on the day” — and has serious memory lapses.

“I ask my wife things over and over again, and she’s like, ‘I just told you that,’ ” Randle El told the Post-Gazette. “I’ll ask her three times the night before and get up in the morning and forget. Stuff like that. I try to chalk it up as I’m busy, I’m doing a lot, but I have to be on my knees praying about it, asking God to allow me to not have these issues and live a long life. I want to see my kids raised up. I want to see my grandkids.”

In 2013, Randle El and three other former players filed a lawsuit against the NFL in a Manhattan federal court alleging the NFL “has done everything in its power to hide the issues and mislead players concerning the risks associated with concussions,” according to The Village Voice. In 2015, after that suit was consolidated with more than 2,000 others, he was one of more than 5,000 players that received more than $900 million in settlement money from the NFL to resolve a concussion lawsuit.

Well now I'm sure football stans would call him a punk. Its sad he took this long to see that getting into a car crash every few seconds wasn't worth it.

Damn. Sad shit. I can actually see football being banned in high schools within 10-15 years if technology doesn't significantly improve helmets.

I will forever say that this lawsuit is bullshit. Where are the law suits against high school and college athletics? That's where the "problem" starts.
As a former high school and college player, I can say that I knew the risks when I played. I'm likely going to need my knees replaced and back surgery, but I wouldn't change it. I fucking loved the sport.

You would've thought they would've done so by now. Every time I see a commercial for tempurpedic beds, they show how the visco-elastic material absorbs impact. I wonder why they don't use that material in helmets.

:smh: Sad to here this man.

I don't think improved helmet technology will help much at all in preventing concussion. :smh:

I actually think they need to go back to leather helmets because all the padding now seems to make dudes hit each other harder and that shakes the brain shake up making it more likely to concuss.

Those lawsuits coming. And children can't properly assess the risks. Lawyers will eventually have a field day with high schools. Just wait. Developing brains getting damaged. Damn. NFL and college money the only thing slowing down the attack on high schools.

Listen playing in the NFL is not fucking worth it! Only 5% of players actually get that real money. You get beat the fuck up all your life just even trying to make it there. Its beyond a full time job. Of course you get paid but getting the league minimum. The money you do end up getting goes to trainers, family, bitches, and trying to keep up with the niccas that's really balling in the league. Then in the end what do you have to show for it.They just toss your ass to the side. You got fucking brain damage. You can barely walk and the NFL has no fucks to give. Im 6,8 350 back then I weighed 235 and played football and basketball. My jr year my mother asked me to stop playing football and concentrate on basketball cause she said sooner or later your going to get hurt. Now i understand why she was so worried. The way they have professional sports set up, they these MF thinking they are winning when they are really loosing. Just another form of fucking slavery. They just give these slaves a bigger plate when its time to eat!

My uncle (the weird religious one) was on the Steelers practice squad back in the day. He ended up committing suicide in a mental hospital. We never connected the dots. We just thought he was crazy.

they wont be happy til players are literally on the field looking like this....

how about playing without pads and helmets
like in rugby until they get to college level?

then they can actually give informed consent to play

Reminds me of ex Falcon QB Chris Miller. One day after a home game, he said that he had to call his wife for directions home.

Now that I think, I'm not sure I will let my son play until he is old enough to understand what's coming to him. I played tackle football from 8 years old until my early 20's, I signed as an undrafted free agent to the league after college.

I done had a few concussions, 4 surgeries on my right knee, 2 on my right shoulder. I can deal with the joint injuries, but when I was growing nobody really thought about head injuries. I played hard and reckless because I was always trying to get the big hits in games and practice to put fear in the offense.

Whoever develops a new/safer helmet will get paid. The NCAA/NFL makes WAY too much money.

Agreed, and it isn't that hard. In high school I broke my neck playing football, broke the Odontoid peg, afterward they made me wear a U-shaped pad under my helmet that filled the gap between my helmet and shoulder pads. They could easily create a special helmet/shoulder pad combo unit so the shoulders take the impact when the helmet is struck.

Also, if anyone has seen the movie Concussion, it was very good.

You made it further than most. Props! I played in hs and in the army. I still have lower back pain and right knee aches a little, but nothing to really complain about. The injuries that haunts me the most are the back spasms and the pain from where I tore a ligament in my left ankle from playing basketball. My football days injuries don't really bother me that much.

What's the difference between miners and oil-rig workers and players?

They all sacrifice their bodies for money accepting and welcoming the dangers. Can't feel to sorry for them.

You loved it but was it worth your knees?

thats it in a nutshell... youre more likely to hit harder if you don't feel it. Strip DOWN the padding and I guarantee you cats will ease up on that shit...the first time you hit someone and injure YOURSELF you won't do that shit anymore.

notice how you don't hear about the same issues in soccer or hockey or rubgy...see above for the reason.

LOL probably not... Ask this question when I turn 70.

I get back spams sometimes, but those extra heavy humid days(which Houston has too many) plus cold fronts have my shoulder killing me so bad that I cant hold a pen to write longer than 5 minutes. I got lucky with my knee, because when I was 17 I tore my acl/mcl and broke my femur, but I didn't damage any of the meniscus, but I'm sure when I get older this knee will give me the blues.

I wont even talk about the broken finger and hand bones because that is minor.
