Didn't get any response in the Technical thread, so I thought I would give the main forum a try.
Looking for input as to what the best photo editing software is for a beginner. I have some old photos that I would like to repair (cracks, fading, remove background images, etc.). Thanks for any input.

Windows based….free……its like a photoshop lite.

All you need.

Carry on…..

Use Photoshop. It’s where you’re gonna end up once you get good anyway. Learn on the best out there so you can save yourself from buying needless apps and upgrades along the way. There’s PLENTY of resources on YouTube that will make it easy for you to learn.

This guy has some of the best photoshop content out there for free.

Lightroom, I think will do the job. Very easy to use. Not sure about restoring photos. You'll have to scan them regardless of the software you use to restore them, and that's a real pain in the ass.

Photoshop has a massive learning curve. It is powerful as fuck but it does take time to learn.

Depending on how many photos you have it might be worth looking into a photo restoration service.

Also, IIRC Lightroom is a one-time payment but PS is a monthly fee. If you're not a pro, the PS fee might be too much.

I don't mind paying. I didn't ask for a freebie. I am looking for the best program for a beginner. At 70 years old I'm not as computer savvy as some of you youngsters. This will be for my personal use only. If you can be of assistance in this area I will appreciate it.

Thank you

Get a free trial of PS and then try out the colorize and photo restoration neural filters. Not going to be "professional" results without some practice/skill but probably will give you something way better than what you started off with. There are also a ton of free "AI" photo restoration/colorization sites but the results will vary dramatically and I am always concerned about what they are doing with the images they collect. I am on extended vacation now and my sleep pattern is still fucked up so I am up editing raw images on lightroom
