Photo altering question..

I know I could have asked this in the photo forum, but honestly, replies are kinda slow there @ times..

Quick question..

What program can I use to alter a photo to B&W besides one color. Like for example you may see a whole pic that is B&W besides whatever in the pic that was red. I know Canon camera models have a mode that can do this but Im working with a Sony. Im just looking for any easier way that using PS to select the areas then mess with the color/saturation/transp, etc.. Actually Im looking for a much "liter" program than PS all together. Im packing up to move and I will be without my desktop for a while shortly and will be depending solely on my netbook. So something a program not to demanding and streamlined would be very helpful. If you could also explain the mode or process I will have to use that will help also. Thanks in advance.
