NORTH PHILADELPHIA- Philadelphia Police say they charged two men in connection with the carjacking that killed three children and injured several others in the city’s Tioga section on Friday.
Since Friday, detectives have been working around the clock to find the suspects involved in a fatal carjacking incident.
In a 3:30 p.m. press conference on Monday, Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey thanked the public and the media for their help with bringing the case to a conclusion.
Captain James Clark said Jonathan Rosa,19, turned himself in with his mother and pastor and Cornelius Crawford, 22, was taken into custody Sunday night by Homicide detectives and US Marshals.
The suspects have been charged with 3 counts of murder in the second degree, conspiracy, robbery, robbery of a vehicle, kidnapping, sexual assault and other related offenses.
Police said the two men carjacked a 45-year-old real estate agent at gunpoint at N 6th Street and Cumberland Streets, forced her into the backseat. The two suspects alternated behind the wheel and sexually assaulted the woman they carjacked in the backseat, according to authorities.
Police say the suspects lost control of the car due to a high rate of speed, the tire blew, leading to the accident. Police also have video from the crash scene. The suspects crashed the SUV into Keisha Williams, and her three children, 15-year-old Keiearra Williams, 10-year-old Thomas Reed and 7-year-old Terrence Moore, police say. The three children died as a result of the accident.
The mother and a 65-year-old woman at the fruit stand were badly injured. The mother remains in critical condition at the hospital.
According to Commissioner Ramsey, the original motive was robbery.
Captain Clark said a cell phone was found at scene by a Good Samaritan who called police. According to Captain Clark, the suspects only knew each other for a one week.
“That cell phone belonged to Rosa, Jonathan Rosa, and that's what really got this investigation going,” said Captain Clark.
“He made a statement without me being present. He is doing everything in his power to atone for this. He is completely shattered,” said Rosa’s attorney Christopher Warren. “He's never been in trouble. He's never been in jail. He supposed to be going into the Marines in a couple months. Obviously, that's not gonna happen."
In 2007, Crawford was convicted of robbery, sentenced 5-13 years, and was paroled near his minimum date, according to Captain Clark.
Both suspects face life in prison.
On Monday, Charles Barkley, former 76er player, has offered to pay for the funeral services of the three victims.
