I don't know how credible the LA Times is, but I must say I'm even shocked at this move. I guess he decided being the winningest coach of all time wasnt worth it.

Coach Phil Jackson has decided to sign a contract extension that keeps him with the Los Angeles Lakers for two more seasons according to the Los Angeles Times.

Jackson met Wednesday with Jerry Buss and informed the Lakers owner of his decision.

Jackson, 62, will get a modest raise from the three-year, $30-million contract he signed in June 2005, which was the richest per-annum coaching deal in U.S. pro sports history. Jackson is expected to make $11 million or $12 million a season in his new deal.

you're assuming that they're not planning to trade a 300 lb. elephant/albatross that's been unable to advance them deeper into the playoffs.

You're right but do you think one of the stipulations of signing the contract was that Dr. Buss had to agree to ship Wobe out of LA?

The funny thing is that I think that they could be contenders if they brought in a team-oriented SG that could make jump shots and defend on the perimeter, and got a couple of solid front court players in return. Antawn Jamison will be a FA. Do you think he'd take a pay-cut and sign? Or finally make a trade to Phoenix to get Shawn Marion, Raja Bell, and a couple of picks? (Highly unlikely)

Their division is, in my opinion, one of the worst in the NBA and with a real team, they'd be able to pad their schedule with 9-10 winnable games off the bat.
