Bill Belichick was hit with a $500,000 fine Thursday night -- the maximum allowable by NFL by-laws -- for violating the league's policy on videotaping the Jets defensive signs Sunday. In addition, Roger Goodell notified the Patriots that they would forfeit a 2008 first-round draft choice if they reach the playoffs, or second- and third-round picks if they do not qualify for the playoffs. The club was also fined $250,000.

Wow, the Patriot haters are in full effect. The penalty is severe enough. You all are talking about forfeiting games? That's just ridiculous. Logistically, how would that work in the NFL? I don't get it. Anyway, the other 31 teams in the league do shady things to gain an advantage. This type of thing is not new to football or sports. I'm not saying they were right or just, I'm just saying that if you all don't believe that the other teams are engaging in some kind of shady conduct, then you're all very naive about the whole situation.

The Patriots were wrong. They did something that Roger Goodell specifically addressed during the offseason. They happened to get caught for something that all other teams do, though. They were the media darlings for the past 4 years and that's why everyone is so happy about this and talking about how the fine was a slap on the wrist. If it were the Oakland Raiders or some other equally bad team, I doubt there would have even been a thread on this board. Stealing signals is cheating, but you still have to line up and decide the game on the field.

The tapes were taken before the first quarter was complete during Sunday's game. When would they have had time to break down the polaroids and match each one up with each signal? When did they have time to watch the tapes on the sidelines? The answer is that they didn't. They beat the Jets on talent and coaching alone, so there is no need to forfeit the game. If the tapes would have been confiscated after the game or even after halftime, then it would be a different story, maybe. You all need to wisen up and realize that there is some form of cheating that goes on in every sport and on every level. Some people get caught while others don't. That's the bottom line.

Of course, I have to agree with you on some level. Black people are always punished more severely than white people committing the same crimes. With that said, however, Tony Dungy is very well-respected in ALL football circles. He is one of the most adored coaches in the game. I think he would have gotten the support of a lot more people than Belichek did. People hate Bill Belichek. People hate the NE Patriots. That's just the way it goes. Let any other team in the NFL go on a 3 or 4 year run of dominance. The same thing will happen to them. People just resent a dominant force. They somehow think its unfair for one person or one group to sit atop the rest for too long. People hate that.

Again, that is why everyone outside of NE is so happy about this story. Doesn't anyone find it odd that this story broke after a Jet's game? There is bad blood all over Belichek and Mangini. Then you have LT talking sh*t, a guy who plays for a team where their best defensive player was suspended six games and fined last year for using a banned substance. Get real. Every team steals signals. Every team holds. Every team has players that use some form of performance enhancers. New England just got caught and they will be made an example of. I believe $500,000 is the MAXIMUM fine allowed for an individual (not counting being docked salary for suspended games). Don't think anyone's ever been fined that much. Belichick has to pay it himself (the club can't pick it up). That's like 1/4 of his paycheck (or the equivalent of 4 suspended games).

The league's punishment wasn't about that particular Jets game being affected. It was about the general principle of breaking the explicit rule that prohibits the use of video equipment on the sideline or in the team's box (for whatever purpose). They want you to use more primitive technology during the game.

They could've done all that "signal stealing/recording/analyzing" stuff (on video) from the stands, like everyone else.
