Andre Oshea

3D artist Andre Oshea has been commissioned to create a NFT tribute to late actor Chadwick Boseman, which will be a part of the six-figure, “Everyone Wins’ goody bags presented to Oscar nominees at tomorrow night’s Academy Awards ceremony.

The NFT itself will be sold via a two-day auction with proceeds going to The Colon Cancer Foundation, which combats the same disease that tragically cut short the life of the Black Panther star less than a year ago.

Boseman has been posthumously nominated in the Lead Actor category of tomorrow night’s awards for his performance in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.
Oshea is a 28-year-old, Atlanta-based animator who has worked with Adult Swim and John Legend and whose work encompasses futurism and surrealism with recurring futuristic figure of a black woman.

“NFTs have really changed my creative process,” Oshea said. “Now I focus less on making clients happy and entirely on my own creative visions and explorations. I also take immense pride in being a Black man and NFTs allow me to bring that into my artwork in really cool ways.”

Oshea’s NFT tribute to Chadwick Boseman will be auctioned on Rarible from Sunday 25th April – Tuesday 27th April.

Chadwick Boseman immortalized in NFT artwork to be given to Academy Award nominees

Chadwick Boseman has been immortalized in a new piece of digital artwork, which will be a part of the highly coveted gift bags Oscar nominees will receive on Sunday.

Each nominee's gift bag will contain an NFT, or non-fungible token, that authenticates a 3D digital tribute to the late actor created by artist Andre Oshea. The NFT itself will then be auctioned with proceeds going to The Colon Cancer Foundation, which fights against the same disease that took Boseman's life at age 43 last summer. Oshea will also be donating 50 percent of the proceeds to the Colon Cancer Foundation.

"The way to immortalize an artist is to honor them with art," Oshea captioned the NFT via Instagram on Saturday. "I was tasked to create a tribute NFT for Chadwick Boseman for the Oscars! Bringing this piece to life has been one of my most challenging & rewarding experiences as an artist."

Boseman earned a posthumous Oscar nomination for Best Actor in a Leading role for his portrayal of trumpeter Levee Green in Netflix's Ma Rainey's Black Bottom. Others competing in the same category include Riz Ahmed, Mads Mikkelsen, Tahar Rahim, and Adarsh Gourav.

He's already won awards at the Golden Globe, Critics Choice, Screen Actors Guild, among others, for the dramatic flim about real-life singer Ma Rainey (played by Viola Davis) and a turbulent afternoon recording session in 1920s Chicago.

You can watch People and Entertainment Weekly's Red Carpet Live: Hollywood's Biggest Night via EW.com ahead of Sunday's ceremony from 5:30-6:30 p.m. ET/2:30-3:30 p.m. PT. The Oscar's ceremony will air live from Los Angeles at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT on ABC.

:eek2::yes: That's amazing. I hope the Brotha Andre makes a bag off of this work in the future. NFTs have become a game-changer.

I wonder what the total number of swag bags will be handed out. Somewhere down the line, somebody's gonna have their tribute up for sale during a pinch. :money::money::money:

Maybe it’s going over my head but if it’s proceeds are going to colon cancer research then I don’t see the issue?
3D artist Andre Oshea was commissioned to create an NFT tribute to Boseman, which will be available for auction through Tuesday, April 27. Copies of the piece will be available in the gift bags for this year's Oscar nominees. Those who wish to can bid on the NFT on Rarible, and 50% of the proceeds will go to the Colon Cancer Foundation, an organization dedicated to colon cancer awareness, prevention, and research. According to Oshea, the buy price is a whopping $1.2 million.

NFTs have been on the rise within the last few months, and it's no surprise one is now being used to honor Boseman. With a buy price as high as $1.2 million, though, it remains to be seen what heights the auction could reach within the next couple of days. Reactions to the NFT have been mixed on social media, with some questioning how genuine a tribute this really is. Nevertheless, the auction is officially open.

With Black Panther 2 still moving forward at Marvel Studios, there will be a chance to honor his legacy as the MCU character. With the Oscars, though, Boseman can be remembered for his entire career, even beyond his Ma Rainey's Black Bottom performance. It's a small consolation prize, as Boseman himself deserved to be here for this moment. He was a special actor, and fans will be mourning and paying tribute to him for a long time. Boseman will certainly never be forgotten.

Artist apologizes for 'triggering' Chadwick Boseman NFT Oscars art

Amid social media outrage, Andre Oshea clarifies "misinformation around the project" and stresses that the art wasn't included in nominee gift bags.

The artist behind a controversial piece depicting the image of late Oscar nominee Chadwick Boseman has apologized for "triggering" his audience.
After social media erupted with criticism over the decision to tie the artwork's release to the Oscars, Oshea released a statement on Instagram apologizing for "any upset caused," and stressing that access to the digital NFT (non-fungible token) wasn't included in nominee gift bags at the Oscars ceremony.

"I now recognize that Chadwick's face is a triggering reminder of his death rather than his life, and I will be redesigning the artwork to be auctioned off later this week," he wrote, after explaining that he was commissioned by Nomine(eth) — a company not affiliated with the Oscars — to produce the piece for a charity auction that would partially benefit The Colon Cancer Foundation and research into the disease that killed Boseman in August 2020.

However, even amid the backlash, Oshea "will still be donating 50 percent of the funds to the Colon Cancer Foundation to fund their invaluable work with cancer research and testing."

On Sunday, Oshea shared the piece on social media, explaining in a caption that the process of creating it was one of his "most challenging and rewarding experiences as an artist."

At the Oscars ceremony, Boseman (Ma Rainey's Black Bottom) competed for a posthumous Oscar victory in the Best Actor category alongside Gary Oldman (Mank), Steven Yeun (Minari), Riz Ahmed (Sound of Metal), and Anthony Hopkins (The Father) — the last of whom ultimately won in a surprise late-season surge that also saw him take the BAFTA Award in the same category.

"Well, here I am in my homeland in Wales, and at 83 years of age I did not expect to get this award, I really didn't," Hopkins said in a video statement released after the telecast. "And [I'm] very grateful to the Academy, and thank you, and I want to pay tribute to Chadwick Boseman, who was taken from us far too early, and again thank you all very much. I really did not expect this. So I feel very privileged and honored. Thank you."

what is so bad about it

i swear social media stay "outraged" about something..

people can't do shit now-a-days

To quote an ol BGOL expression..

This is relative to my interests

As an artist, who's done a lil work in digital medium, I'd love an NFT thread.

I found it hard to wrap my mind around the very concept of NFTs myself, but this vid helped me make sense of the how and why people spend what they do on such things as art, and now shoes and shit.

My brother and I talked about Kanye's Yeezys going for 1.8 Mil, like who the fuck...I could see a pair of Jordan's game-worn sneaks, but WTF?!
The times, they are a changing. :dunno:
