Papa John’s franchise owner will pay $500G for ripping off more than 200 NYC workers

ALBANY — The owner of three Papa John’s franchises in the Bronx and Manhattan will pay $500,000 to more than 200 workers who were shortchanged on their wages, the Daily News has learned.
Papa John’s franchisee Sultan Ali Lakhani will make the payments as part of deal with state Attorney General Eric Schneiderman and the U.S. Labor Department to resolve a three-year-old investigation into claims he violated state and federal labor laws.
"When businesses brazenly violate the law by systematically failing to pay their employees minimum and overtime wages, they rip off some of our state's most vulnerable workers," Schneiderman said.

Lakhani’s restaurants are located at 701 W. 179th St. in Washington Heights; 4927 Broadway in Inwood; and 161 W. 231st St. in the Bronx.

An attorney for Lakhani did not respond to a request for comment.
In addition to paying $500,000, the restaurants must implement procedures to handle employee complaints, post a statement of employees' rights, and designate a compliance officer who will submit quarterly reports to Schneiderman’s office.
The case marks the eighth case that Schneiderman has brought against a Papa John’s franchisee in the city over the past two years.
