According to the New York Post, Sarah Palin posted a note on her Facebook page this past Monday calling for President Obama to fire his Chief of Staff, Rahm Emanuel, for comments he made that she said were offensive to children with developmental disabilities.
Now, I'm not particularly a fan of Rahm Emanuel. I could take or leave him. But, just as I have problems with the GLBT movement equating its fight with the Civil Rights Movement's fight against racism, I have problems with taking every slur and elevating it to the level of racist bigotry.
Nevertheless, lets look at Texas.

- “I would ask the president to show decency in this process by eliminating one member of that inner circle, Mr. Rahm Emanuel, and not allow Rahm’s continued indecent tactics to cloud efforts,” Palin said in the posting.
- “Just as we’d be appalled if any public figure of Rahm’s stature ever used the “N-word” or other such inappropriate language, Rahm’s slur on all God’s children with cognitive and developmental disabilities – and the people who love them – is unacceptable, and it’s heartbreaking,” the post continued.

A Palin spokeswoman seemed to back away from earlier criticism of conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh. Yesterday, when asked for comment on Limbaugh's use of the "r" word in a recent broadcast.
Palin spokeswoman told Greg Sargent of the Washington Post, "Governor Palin believes crude and demeaning name-calling at the expense of others is disrespectful." Today, Stapleton claims the statement was meant generally and she was not specifically referring to Limbaugh. Still, she declined to say that Palin believes Limbaugh's statements were acceptable. Sargent reprinted the email he sent Stapleton in which he specifically asked about Limbaugh's statement.

So together, we have chosen to try to sensitize others to the pervasive but often ignored prejudice they suffer by asking for a change of language and a change of heart. Our message is as simple as it is powerful: people with intellectual disabilities are human beings.
