Daley calls Chinese prez visit ‘big, big, big’

By Fran Spielman City Hall Reporter Jan 12, 2011 6:49PM

Chinese President Hu Jintao will visit Chicago next week for a two-day trip that, Mayor Daley hopes, will establish the city as the “Chinese economic gateway to America.”

The visit will take place Jan 20-21. Chicago is the only American city that Hu is visiting outside Washington D.C., where he will meet with President Obama.

“It is a big deal. Big, big, big, big, big deal,” Daley crowed, crediting the Chinese language program he has established in the Chicago Public Schools.

“Why is he coming to Chicago? He could take any other city .... We’re in a global society. We compete globally. You have to have that global participation of China in economic development—both here and abroad. That’s why it’s really important for us to have his visit. The only city he’s visiting outside of Washington D.C. is Chicago.”

The mayor and his wife will host a gala dinner for the Chinese President at the Chicago Hilton and Towers that will be underwritten by private donations.

President Hu will also tour an exhibition by Chinese businesses with a Midwest presence and visit Walter Payton College Prep. The showcase school is home to the Confucius Institute, which Daley described as the “first Chinese cultural education center” in America and the only center in the world based in a high school.

“It’s not just a language program. It’s a study of their culture, their history, traditions. This is the largest public school system [Chinese] language program in the country. That is amazing. That alone is very significant,” the mayor said.

Daley has made frequent trips to China before, during and after Chicago’s failed Olympic bid.

“I believe in the Chinese future. They believe in the United States future. We have more in common with them. And that’s why it’s important for the future of our city as a global city,” he said.

Go take a look over in Africa; When China pays you a visit..especially the President....they mean bizness! During his 20+ year reign Mayor Daley has sold much of Chicago to corporations for his own personal financial gains. When he entered office Black contractors had over 20% of the cities construction contracts, now its barely have 3% thxs to him. According to him Black Contractors are hard to find and the ones that do exist are hard to get bonded. So instead he "bonds" the more successful White Construction Corps, many of which hire illegal Alien Mexicans, so he can earn him some extra dough.

So lets see what Daley is trying to sell or has sold before he leaves office.....

HEY! Maybe the Chinese are coming into town to buy Midway Airport?? Or Maybe City Hall :dunno:

Let me ramble about some other issues.....

We just got our taxes raised. Which means more cash....which means more mismanagement of cash....which means more corruption in Chicago.

Daley's friend, Dictator/Zionist Jew Rahm Emanuel said being Chicago's Mayor would be a Dream Job. Hmmmm....I wonder why. So far Rahm has pulled out all the punches to get the Black vote which constitutes for over 50% of Chicago's population.

He gets campaign help from a Man that fucked over Blacks, in Africa and America, while he was in office, but Black Americans still love him ....Bill Clinton.

He gets a few Chicagoan coons that many Blacks in Chicago sympathized with over the years to come out and support him. BTW....some got cash for their services:

Jenifer Hudson: Rahms Jew Brotha is her agent:

I guess he'll get Darrien Alberts Mother to support him next.

Chicagoans that are about to pick their next Mayor....stop being weak...like you have been for 20+ years when you consistently voted for Daley. Please go do your homework before your dish out your support to any of the candidates..even the Black ones. Dont let their party affiliation or other BS like skin color, YOUR EMOTIONS etc. be the determining factor of your vote. You see what that got you when you voted for Obama.

Hold-up. How can a white man control the Black vote ? ? ?

How does Black-Chicago allow that to happen ? ? ?

That doesn't speak well of the Chicago Black community. :(

Sounds like good advice; but how much of Black-Chicago hears that plea, in this medium ? ? ?

Ain't no way in hell a white boy or Jew would stand a snowball's chance in hell of getting elected dogcatcher in Detroit.

Yet, black people are the majority in Chicago and electing a white... for 20 years!!!!

What is going on in Chicago?

People vote based on who they see as representing them.

If you call yourself white, you will vote white, barring other considerations.

It's not as if only black people do it. Everyone does.

That is why Chicago makes no DAMN sense!

How in the world does a majority city of black people vote for a white for 2 decades? It's like a majority Arab city voting for a Zionist 2 decades. Or, a Southern white city voting for a black person for 2 decades.

Chicago has Oprah, Farrakhan, Jesse Jackson, Tom Joyner, the late Bernie Mack, R. Kelly, and Obama.

Yet, they can't find anyone qualified to run for Mayor?

Something just doesn't add up here.

Yes, your thought process and terribly overly simple view of the world.

Let's work backwards
Out of those celebrities you named, have any of them wanted to be mayor of Chicago? No? Then how is that relevent to your point?

Local politics has a lot less to do with ethnicity than it does who people see, wrongly or rightly, as having their interests at heart and having the ability to get things done.

I live in a Southern city that's majority White but has a Black, Democratic mayor. A city that not long ago was in line to host the Republican National Convention (now we're a finalist for the Democratic National Convention, so there has been a seachange). And he's not our first Black mayor (he's the second).

You are correct that people vote based on people they see as representing them but that goes much, much deeper than skin color. Just being Black does not and has never guaranteed a candidate the majority of Black votes. If anything, being a Democrat is a better way of insuring the Black vote than being Black.

Well, I can't speak for the southern mentality.

Who am I to question your authority on southern politics?

My experiences in Chicago have not been negative. It just baffles me that they can't do what Detroit has done for decades... elect and keep a mayor who is not white.

Do you think Detroit is a good example urban properity?

The idea of voting for or against someone because of their skin color is just ass backwards. That's how you end up with poor representation in government.

Yes, I do think Detroit could be an example by which cities with majority non-white populations can study.

Despite the economic/media war that whites have waged non-stop for 4+ decades, Detroit is still an economic powerhouse that cannot be ignored.

It's not easy fighting whites, but at least Detroiters never gave up and never gave in.

I think that is an example Chicago could follow to take control of their city.

Its not about voting for someone White for 20+ years, its about Blacks consistently voting for people that dont address their issues, a la Barack Obama.

Daley wouldnt have been able to do most of what he's done if it wasnt for the many Blacks Aldermen/Women that voted in his favor. Most of which use the race card, emotions and the Christian religion to get the Black vote in Chicago.

But...when you dont hold your elected official accountable..thats what you get..nothing.

Not a fan of Rahm Emmanuel's but when was he a "dictator"?

One of the widely used definitions of Dictator in case you forgot......

Dictator:
-authoritarian: a person who behaves in a tyrannical manner.

I know Rahms history....do you?

BTW.....the sarcastic use of the word "Jew" on a message board cant be equated to someone using Religion as their basis for putting someone in a powerful position.

Widely used by who? I have never heard someone who has never held an office higher than a Congressman in the House of Representatives be called a "dictator". Rahm's personality and temperment are well known but to use the word "dictator" is just reaching.

I'm pretty good with sarcasm and that's not it. That's labeling and using it as a slur.

Mayor Daley showed his approval for these Chinese language programs that popping up all over the US. China is also doing something similar to this over in Africa. The reason theyre doing it over in Africa should be known by many of you already. With that being stated, is this something that we as Americans need to worry about or go along with?

Is China trying to colonize the World? What position is the USA playing in all of this?

Seems like modern day slave trading to me.

Columbus, Ohio (CNN) --

Teaching Mandarin is a growing trend across schools in the United States, where the number of students enrolling in Chinese language and cultural programs has tripled in recent years.

A school district outside Columbus, Ohio, is on track to receive more than $1 million in federal grant money for its Chinese arts and language program. But what's really caught people's attention is the $30,000 that the district is getting from the government of China.

The Gahanna-Jefferson School District began teaching Mandarin Chinese four years ago and since then, the number of students in the program has increased from about 40 to 350.

Administrators felt China should have a home in their suburban Ohio school system since the communist country has the world's second-largest economy and is becoming increasingly relevant.

"We owe it to our students so they can be a successful part of the world," said Hank Langhals, coordinator for pupil services. "And China will be a major player there."

The district has been dubbed a Confucius Classroom, which in a nutshell means it has earned the support of the Chinese Ministry of Education. The funds will be used, school officials say, to support their visiting teacher from China and to foster the newly formed relationship with their sister school in the southern Chinese province of Kunming.

From New England to California and many places in between, dozens of public schools have similar relationships with the Chinese government. And the number continues to grow.

Chinese student loving life at U.S. college

During his visit to the United States this week, Chinese President Hu Jintao plans to visit one such program at the Walter Payton College Prep school in Chicago.

The nonprofit Asia Society works, in many instances, with the Chinese government to help secure new Confucius Classrooms and relationships. They work with more than 60 schools in the U.S.

Mandy Aldis is a mother of three at Gahanna's schools. She and her family moved to the district specifically for the language program.

"We feel very lucky that we have this," Aldis said. "I say it's just like math, English, art -- it's as important as anything else."

Aldis added that having guest teachers from China who are native speakers adds to the experience. Her son is a sophomore and has taken a serious interest in the language.

"I'd have potential to get a job doing translating or interpreting, maybe work for the State Department," said Andrew Aldis.

Pop culture helps bridge U.S.-China gap

Judy Huang Lewis, who owns a business in Ohio that regularly does business with China, said the need for Chinese speakers is increasing, particuarly because of the small Asian population in the Midwest.

"It's really been challenging," she said. "Schools that offer stuff like this I think are crucial going forward."

But the program doesn't sit that well with everyone, in part because of the Chinese government's role.

Aldis said he hears about it "all the time."

"I actually have a few friends that are hateful towards the language and the culture, maybe because it's different," he said. "A lot of Americans don't really know much about Chinese culture so they see it as alien so it's bad. I think China has a beautiful culture."

Teacher Chiwei Lin has also heard some concerns raised about the program.

"Not really often because I think most Americans are really polite," Chiwei said. "They wouldn't just say something like that in front of your face, but there are people who are not willing to open up to other cultures."

Outside Los Angeles, the Hacienda La Puente Unified School District was set to receive similar funds from the Chinese government through the Confucius Classroom network. But backlash from community members who cited "communist propaganda" meant they ultimately had to turn it down.

"The objection ... was not to the teaching of a foreign language," said John Kramar, the district's former superintendent and a vocal opponent of the proposal. "The problem here was the culture portion and the involvement with the Chinese government."

Kramar said he was concerned about impressionable elementary students learning about communism through material provided by the Chinese government.

School officials at Ohio's Gahanna-Jefferson school district maintain that is not part of their curriculum.

Asked whether they must follow certain guidelines in order to receive the funds, International Language Coordinator Rae Harriott-White said "absolutely not." She added that they wouldn't have accepted teachers from China if they came with their own curriculum.

School administrator Hank Langhals stressed that a relationship, however small, between China and the United States will be mutually beneficial in the long run.

"We don't agree with everything, how the system works in China, but hopefully as it opens more and more, which it certainly has, they will become more democratic, they will become more open with less censorship, so you hope that's all there," Langhals said. "That doesn't mean, though, that if it's not there yet that our students don't learn about the culture and don't learn about the language."

Parent Mandy Aldis said she isn't bothered one bit by the program being funded by China's government.

"I'm not sure why [people have problems with it]," Aldis said. "It's wonderful that [China is] reaching out to us and we're reciprocating. I think the more you're exposed to another culture, the more you understand each other, you're just a more well-rounded person. And I think everybody could use that."

Youre just looking at the "transportation" part of the definition slave trading...then you respond? Maybe I shouldve worded it differently so a person like yourself couldve understood it a little better.

Now....out of that entire post about Chinas growing presence in the US, thats the only line that you care to respond to?

Ive read a lot of your "emotional" filled responses on BGOL when it pertains to Prez Obama and politics in general. I really dont know why I keep responding to you. Im done....I feel like im on your level now..:puke:.... time for a shower.

You should have. Reckless hyperbole reflects poorly on the user.

What else was there to respond to? It was a newspiece, not an editorial.
It's interesting but I'd rather see how it pans out than decide on how dire it might be based on my own prejudices.

If you read my posts in Obama threads and saw them as "emotional" ( 1. like that's a negative, 2. as if your own are not) then you are misreading my posts. But it's typical for some to dismiss people who challenge their facts as being "emotional".

My words were never derogatory. This is lite in comparison to what I say offline. I speak the Truth about the no good people to be pc. I see them when I'm back in town visiting family. They are not worth the air God lets them breathe. We need gentrification. Not some white dude who will allow drugs and prostitution. The city need to get rid of certain kinds of people not hardworking upper middle class Black folks either.
